Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristocracy and Justice: Shelburne Essays, Ninth Series Dear holt, It is fitting that I should dedi cate to you these essays on the stress and tragedy of modern times, since most of them were written for the Unpopular Review of which you are the editor and informing spirit. How much they have profited by your kindly revision we will keep a secret between us. And I know that you are in general, if not complete, agreement with the ideas here expressed, or they would not have found a place in the magazine which you are conducting for a definite purpose. Only in one matter our correspondence, and more particularly our long talks at the Century in those late hours when other men have gone to their homes in fear for the morrow, have brought out a seemingly radical difference of opinion. How often you have asked me why I showed such hostility to the word evo lution! To this question I am trying in this brief preface to give an answer. Book The Aristocracy of Talent

Download or read book The Aristocracy of Talent written by Adrian Wooldridge and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Times (UK) book of the year! Meritocracy: the idea that people should be advanced according to their talents rather than their birth. While this initially seemed like a novel concept, by the end of the twentieth century it had become the world's ruling ideology. How did this happen, and why is meritocracy now under attack from both right and left? In The Aristocracy of Talent, esteemed journalist and historian Adrian Wooldridge traces the history of meritocracy forged by the politicians and officials who introduced the revolutionary principle of open competition, the psychologists who devised methods for measuring natural mental abilities, and the educationalists who built ladders of educational opportunity. He looks outside western cultures and shows what transformative effects it has had everywhere it has been adopted, especially once women were brought into the meritocratic system. Wooldridge also shows how meritocracy has now become corrupted and argues that the recent stalling of social mobility is the result of failure to complete the meritocratic revolution. Rather than abandoning meritocracy, he says, we should call for its renewal.

Book Nature Justice and Rights in Aristotle s Politics

Download or read book Nature Justice and Rights in Aristotle s Politics written by Fred Dycus Miller and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995-06 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive study of Aristotle's Politics, which argues that nature, justice, and rights are central to Aristotle's political thought. It sheds new light on his relation to moden natural rights theorists such as Hobbes and Locke, as well as the contemporary liberalism-communitarianism debate. It will be of value to philosophers, political scientists, classical scholars, and anyone interested in the theoretical foundations of human rights. - ;This is a comprehensive study of Aristotle's Politics, which argues that nature, justice, and rights are central to Aristotle's political thought. Fred Miller challenges the widely held view that the concept of rights is alien to Aristotle's thought, and marshals evidence for talk of rights in Aristotle's writings. He argues further that Aristotle's theory of justice supports claims of individual rights, which are political and based in nature. Professor Miller also examines in detail the constitutional applications of Aristotle's theory, including the correct constitutions of kingship, aristocracy, and polity (based in the common advantage), and the deviant constitutions of democracy, oligarchy, and tyranny (based in the advantage of the rulers). Aristotle's treatments of revolution and property rights are also covered, and the major presuppositions of his political theory are critically examined and related to contemporary issues including the liberalism-communitarianism debate. This stimulating treatment of the Politics sheds new light on Aristotle's relation to modern political philosophy. It will be of value to philosophers, political scientists, classical scholars, and anyone interested in the theoretical foundations of human rights. - ;A timely clarification of Aristotle's political philosophy ... Miller provides a closely reasoned scrutiny of the contents of the Politics ... This book is an impressive contribution not only to Aristotelian studies, but to political science at large. - Times Higher Education Supplement; There is detailed and helpful discussion here of many aspects of the Politics. - Phronesis

Book The Inheritance of Wealth

Download or read book The Inheritance of Wealth written by Daniel Halliday and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Halliday examines the moral grounding of the right to bequeath or transfer wealth. He engages with contemporary concerns about wealth inequality, class hierarchy, and taxation, while also drawing on the history of the egalitarian, utilitarian, and liberal traditions in political philosophy. He presents an egalitarian case for restricting inherited wealth, arguing that unrestricted inheritance is unjust to the extent that it enables and enhances the intergenerational replication of inequality. Here, inequality is understood in a group-based sense: the unjust effects of inheritance are principally in its tendency to concentrate certain opportunities into certain groups. This results in what Halliday describes as 'economic segregation'. He defends a specific proposal about how to tax inherited wealth: roughly, inheritance should be taxed more heavily when it comes from old money. He rebuts some sceptical arguments against inheritance taxes, and makes suggestions about how tax schemes should be designed.
