Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arian Controversy The key Of the difficulty is on its other side, in the doctrine Of the unity Of God, which was not (mm, the only taught by Jews and Christians, but generally admitted by serious heathens. The philosophers spoke Of a dim Supreme far off from men, and even the polytheists were not un willing to subordinate their motley crew of gods to some mysterious divinity beyond them all. SO far there was a general agreement. But underneath this seeming harmony there was a deep divergence. Resting on a firm basis Of historic revelation. Book The Search for the Christian Doctrine of God

Download or read book The Search for the Christian Doctrine of God written by Richard Patrick Crosland Hanson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 966 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, The Search for the Christian Doctrine of God is still considered by many scholars to be the finest work on the Arian Controversy. Examining scholarly works on the Controversy and many original texts, Professor Hanson, provides a clear understanding of how the traditional and historic doctrine of God as the Holy Trinity reached its most mature and enduring form. The author is not primarily concerned to defend the orthodox position itself, but rather to discover and examine the formation of that orthodoxy. The history of the events - the Councils, the interventions of the Emperor, the rivalries of sees, the behaviour of bishops, the varying fortunes of the different schools of thought and their leaders - is interwoven with the progression of thought and doctrine during the sixty years of the Controversy. Professor Hanson sees the problem of the reconciliation of two concepts which were both part of the very fabric of Christianity - monotheism and the worship of Jesus Christ as divine.

Book excerpt: The Arian Controversy: Edited By Rev. Mandell Creighton This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Arianism: Chiefly Referring to the Character and Chronology of the Reaction Which Followed the Council of Nicæa The present work is not so much a formal history of Arian ism as a review of the forces at work in the different stages of the controversy, traced out with special regard to the sequence of events and to their connexion with the social characteristics and political history of the Empire. Thus I have felt at liberty in most cases to omit detailed accounts of well-known scenes, and sometimes to leave out subjects of great importance. Anything indeed pretending to the character of a monograph would have been quite beyond my power in the fragments of time which have been at my disposal. Book Arianism Roman Heresy and Barbarian Creed

Download or read book Arianism Roman Heresy and Barbarian Creed written by Guido M. Berndt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume to attempt a comprehensive overview of the evolution of the 'Arian' churches in the Roman world of Late Antiquity and their political importance in the late Roman kingdoms of the 5th-6th centuries, ruled by barbarian warrior elites. Bringing together researchers from the disciplines of theology, history and archaeology, and providing an extensive bibliography, it constitutes a breakthrough in a field largely neglected in historical studies. A polemical term coined by the Orthodox Church (the side that prevailed in the Trinitarian disputes of the 4th century C.E.) for its opponents in theology as well as in ecclesiastical politics, Arianism has often been seen as too complicated to understand outside the group of theological specialists dealing with it and has therefore sometimes been ignored in historical studies. The studies here offer an introduction to the subject, grounded in the historical context, then examine the adoption of Arian Christianity among the Gothic contingents of the Roman army, and its subsequent diffusion in the barbarian kingdoms of the late Roman world.

Book Text Book of Ecclesiastical History Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Text Book of Ecclesiastical History Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by J. C. I. Gieseler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 1 of 3 The first volume of this work appeared in Germany in 1824, and passed through three editions, 1824, 1827, 1831, before the completion of the second volume, in 1835. The cause of this great, for such a work probably unprecedented success, is no doubt mainly the peculiar plan on which it is constructed. It will be seen by a glance at the main body of the work, that by far the greatest part of it consists of extracts from the original sources; the text itself, though containing a complete view of the whole field of Church History, being exceedingly compressed. The advantages of such a plan for a manual of this study will at once be manifest. On the one hand, the student does not wish to be encumbered with long disquisitions on subjects so hard and dry as for the most part here are treated of, and on the other it is important that he should have the means of investigating them on occasion; whilst frequently the points involved are so refined and delicate that the mistranslation of a word, or even the substitution of one language for another, may essentially modify the idea. To use the author's own words in his Preface to the original edition of the work; "It is no where more true than in Church History, that it is impossible rightly to understand an age gone by, without allowing it to speak for itself; the subjects involved in this study being often such as are least easily rendered into a foreign language."
