Book excerpt: The Buildings of Scotland, will, when complete, guide the reader to all buildings of significance in Scotland. In each volume, a gazetteer describes and interprets buildings and developments of all dates and kinds, from ancient brochs and Roman forts to medieval abbeys and castles, classical country houses, Victorian churches, farms and factories, and twentieth-century tower blocks. An introduction explains the broader context, while maps, plans and a central section of over a hundred photographs bring the buildings into closer focus. Comprehensive indexes and an illustrated glossary that includes many Scottish terms turn these indispensable travelling companions into accessible reference works.

Book The People of Argyll Bute and Dunbarton at Home and Abroad 1800 1850

Download or read book The People of Argyll Bute and Dunbarton at Home and Abroad 1800 1850 written by David Dobson and published by Clearfield. This book was released on 2022-03-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The counties of Argyll, Bute, and Dunbarton lie roughly northwest of Glasgow from the Firth of Clyde to the Firth of Lorne, together with Mull and some smaller islands. Most of the people identified here were recorded in contemporary sources, such as court records, newspapers, journals, and monumental inscriptions. Most entries bring together emigrants, their places of origin and destination, especially in North America and Australasia, with their kin who remained in Scotland. This book also identifies many of the burgesses of the burghs of Dunbarton ad Inveraray. The major families or clans found in this region were Campbell, McDonald, McLean, MacAulay, Galbraith, McLachlan, Malcolm, McMillan, McEwan, McDougall, McQuarrie, McKinnon, McGregor, McIntyre, McFarlane, Colquhoun, Lamont, and Buchanan. The early 19th century was a period of restructuring and development resulting from the Agricultural Revolution and the Industrial Revolution. Small farms were formed into larger units, which created a labor surplus. Some of the displaced persons emigrated to the British colonies or the United States, while others moved to the factory towns of the nearby industrial districts. In Argyll, Bute, and Dunbarton the economy remained largely based on farming and fishing, but there was an expansion of burghs functioning as market and administrative centers.

Book Argyll

  • Author : Ian Bradley
  • Publisher : Saint Andrew Press
  • Release : 2015-09-30
  • ISBN : 0861538382
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Argyll written by Ian Bradley and published by Saint Andrew Press. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argyll is the beautiful, wild and inspirational home of Celtic Christianity. It is the spiritual heartland of Scotland and, some would say, of the whole United Kingdom. Until now, no-one has sought to uncover the reasons why the spiritual landscape of Argyll is so distinctively unique, rich and varied. Why is it characterised by a more gentle, liberal, mystical and liturgical Christian culture than the harsher Calvinist evangelism of the neighbouring Highlands and the Western Isles? Why has it produced such a disproportionately large amount of beautiful devotional material? This joyful book, with a cover image by popular artist JoLoMo, is impressionistic and accessible but always of the highest scholarly standards. It reveals the dominant themes and figures in Argyll’s spiritual landscape. Ian Bradley’s love of Argyll shines through as he takes both a geographical and biographical approach and looks at the interplay of landscape and Christian belief through such figures as Columba, Carswell, sundry Campbells, George Matheson, George MacLeod and others. Drawing on extensive original research and interviews with a wide variety of people, including many Church of Scotland ministers and lay people, this is an enthralling and fascinating read for all who are interested in Scottish history and identity, Celtic Christianity and Scotland’s spiritual heritage.
