Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ARGUS wavelength scaling experiments have been performed on low (Be) and high (Au) Z disk targets, with laser wavelengths of 1.06 .mu.m, 0.53 .mu.m and 0.35 .mu.m. The laser provided a 700 psec pulse, with up to 100J and 1.06 .mu.m; 200J at 0.53 .mu.m; and 40J at 0.35 .mu.m. Laser intensities on target ranged from 3 x 1013 to over 3 x 1015W/cm2, using an f/2.2 focusing system. Box calorimeter measurements show the expected increasing fractional absorption at shorter laser wavelengths; absolutely calibrated hard x-ray detectors show the number of suprathermal electrons to be greatly decreased. Scattered light measurements concentrated on stimulated Raman scattering, and the 3/2 harmonic. The SRS was spectrally and temporally resolved during 0.53 .mu.m irradiations; our measurements showed the scattering to be principally from the convective instability, near tenth critical density. Near .omega./2, a double peaked spectral feature is observed. The time resolved data show a number of interesting features, which are discussed.

Book Optical scattering Measurements from 1 06 Mu M 0 53 Mu M and 0 35 Mu M Laser heated Disk Targets

This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion is presented on scattered light measurements relevant to three of the important parametric instabilities which occur in high intensity laser plasma interactions: stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), the two plasmon decay instability (2-.omega./sub pe/), and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). Most of these experiments were carried out on the ARGUS facility. Its configuration is described for the multiple wavelength experiments, all of which were conducted with one beam illumination of flat disk targets.

Book Plasma Experiments with 1 06 Mu M Lasers at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent laser fusion experiments at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory have provided basic data concerning: laser beam propagation and absorption in high temperature plasmas, electron energy transport processes that transfer the absorbed laser energy to the high-density ablation region, the general fluid dynamic expansion and compression of the heated plasma, and the processes responsible for the production of 14-MeV neutrons during implosion experiments. Irradiation experiments were performed with Nd:YAG glass laser systems: the two-beam Janus (less than or equal to40 J/100 ps, approx.0.4 TW) and Argus (less than or equal to140 J, 35 ps, approx. 4 TW), and the single beam Cyclops (less than or equal to70 J/100 ps, approx.0.7 TW). Two classes of targets have been used: glass microshells (approx. 40 to 120 .mu.m in diameter with approx.0.75-.mu.m-thick walls) filled with an equimolar deuterium-tritium mixture, and disks (approx. 160 to 600 .mu.m in diameter and approx. 10 .mu.m thick) of several compositions. The targets were supported in vacuum (pressure less than or equal to10−5 Torr) by thin glass stalks. This paper reports on results related to the propagation, absorption, and scattering of laser light by both spherical and planar targets.

Book Laser Fusion Experiments at 2 TW Argus System Implosion of D T Filled Glass Microspheres

Download or read book Laser Fusion Experiments at 2 TW Argus System Implosion of D T Filled Glass Microspheres written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lawrence Livermore Laboratory Solid State Laser System, Arqus, has successfully performed laser implosion experiments at power levels exceeding 2 TW. D-T filled glass microspheres have been imploded to yield thermonuclear reaction products in excess of 5 x 108 per event. Neutron and .cap alpha. time-of-flight measurements indicate that D-T ion temperatures of approximately 5-6 keV and a density confinement time product (n tau) of approximately 1 x 1012 were obtained in these experiments. Typically two 40J, 40 psec pulses of 1.06 .mu.m light were focused on targets using 20 cm aperture f/1 lenses, producing intensities at the target in excess of 1016 W/cm2. An extensive array of diagnostics routinely monitored the laser performance and the laser target interaction process. Measurements of absorption and asymmetry in both the scattered light distribution and the ion blow off is evidence for non-classical absorption mechanisms and density scale heights of the order of 2 .mu.m or less. The symmetry of the thermonuclear burn region is investigated by monitoring the .cap alpha.-particle flux in several directions, and an experiment to image the thermonuclear burn region is in process. These experiments significantly extend our data base and our understanding of laser induced thermonuclear implosions and the basic laser plasma interaction physics from the 0.4 to 0.7 TW level of previous experiments.

Book Experiments with Laser produced Plasmas

Download or read book Experiments with Laser produced Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From third workshop on laser interaction and related plasma phenomena; Troy, New York, USA (13 Aug 1973). Experimental re sults, particularly x-ray bremsstrahlung and ion time-of-flight measurements, obtained from plasmas generated with a 10 J, 25 psec Nd:YAG-Nd:glass (1.06 mu m) laser delivering focal spot intensities of greater than 1016 W/cm2 are reviewed. Preliminary experiments with a 10 J, 1 nsec C02 (10.6 mu m) laser delivering ~ 1014 W/cm2 to a target are briefly discussed. Both sets of experiments yield high-energy (tens of keV) electrons and ions. Experimental evidence indicates that neutron emission can be explained by electron heating and a consequent ion acceleration. Therefore, neutron production in laser-produced plasmas can be a delusive diagnostic. (auth).

Book Nuclear Fusion

Download or read book Nuclear Fusion written by Edward Morse and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pursuit of nuclear fusion as an energy source requires a broad knowledge of several disciplines. These include plasma physics, atomic physics, electromagnetics, materials science, computational modeling, superconducting magnet technology, accelerators, lasers, and health physics. Nuclear Fusion distills and combines these disparate subjects to create a concise and coherent foundation to both fusion science and technology. It examines all aspects of physics and technology underlying the major magnetic and inertial confinement approaches to developing nuclear fusion energy. It further chronicles latest developments in the field, and reflects the multi-faceted nature of fusion research, preparing advanced undergraduate and graduate students in physics and engineering to launch into successful and diverse fusion-related research. Nuclear Fusion reflects Dr. Morse’s research in both magnetic and inertial confinement fusion, working with the world’s top laboratories, and embodies his extensive thirty-five year career in teaching three courses in fusion plasma physics and fusion technology at University of California, Berkeley.

Book Scattering and Structures

Download or read book Scattering and Structures written by Bogdan Povh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum physics may appear complicated, especially if one forgets the "big picture" and gets lost in the details. However, it can become clearer and less tangled if one applies a few fundamental concepts so that simplified approaches can emerge and estimated orders of magnitude become clear. Povh and Rosina’s Scattering and Structures presents the properties of quantum systems (elementary particles, nucleons, atoms, molecules, quantum gases, quantum liquids, stars, and early universe) with the help of elementary concepts and analogies between these seemingly different systems. In this new edition, sections on quantum gases and an up to date overview of elementary particles have been added.
