Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arguments in Favor of the Ottawa and Georgian Bay Ship Canal: The Shortest, Safest, and Cheapest Route to the Ocean From the Great West, Through Canadian Territory; And the Only Certain Means of Reviving and Restoring the Trade of United Canada Aloud complaint is at present being made that united Canada has been deprived of her carrying trade - that the St. Lawrence has become a tributary of the States, rather than a Canadian highway and despite this, they are meditating about adding to these evils by the proposal to open up a canal route from Lake Huron, leading by the City of Toronto, to Lake Ontario, which would serve no better purpose than to become a bountiful feeder to the United States harbours on the south side of Lake Ontario. In stead of remedying, it is clear that this would but aggrevate the great evils complained of by the Honourable John Young, M. P. P. And those who agree with him. Book The Georgian Bay Ship Canal

Download or read book The Georgian Bay Ship Canal written by Ray Love and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Georgian Bay Ship Canal was a river and lake canalization scheme designed to create a commercial waterway along the route of the voyageurs. It was the dream of Canadian businessmen and entrepreneurs for centuries. Originally a trade route for Indigenous peoples, it became Canada's first Trans-Canada Highway during the fur trade, greatly contributing to the economic development of the colonies of France and later Britain. In the early years of Canadian nationhood it was viewed as the shortest route to get prairie grain to world markets. The canal scheme was supported by no fewer than six Canadian Prime Ministers and for a century less two years was surveyed a dozen times. It was also hotly debated in the Canadian Senate and House of Commons. The scheme was supported by lobby groups in Northern and Eastern Ontario as well as the Montreal business elite. It was strongly criticized by citizen's groups in cities along the shores of the rival Welland-St. Lawrence route. The story told is why the scheme, despite its geographical advantages, failed to see the bucket of a steam shovel. It is a story of political intrigue, Northern Ontario versus the South and the role that federal government overspending played in its demise. It was also at the center of the battle between federal and provincial governments over control of the lucrative resource of hydro-electricity. The book contains many historic maps and photos of the route as well as modern images from this famous Canadian waterway.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural societies founded in the colony of Upper Canada were the institutional embodiment of the ideology of improvement, modelled on contemporary societies in Britain and the United States. In Improving Upper Canada, Ross Fair explores how the agricultural improvers who established and led these organizations were important agents of state formation. The book investigates the initial failed attempts to create a single agricultural society for Upper Canada. It examines the 1830 legislation that publicly funded the creation of agricultural societies across the colony to be semi-public agents of agricultural improvement, and analyses societies established in the Niagara, Home, and Midland Districts to understand how each attempted to introduce specific improvements to local farming practices. The book reveals how Upper Canada’s agricultural improvers formed a provincial association in the 1840s to ensure that the colonial government assumed a greater leadership role in agricultural improvement, resulting in the Bureau of Agriculture, forerunner of federal and provincial departments of agriculture in the post-Confederation era. In analysing an early example of state formation, Improving Upper Canada provides a comprehensive history of the foundations of Ontario’s agricultural societies today, which continue to promote agricultural improvement across the province.
