Book Latin American State Building in Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Latin American State Building in Comparative Perspective written by Marcus J. Kurtz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin American State Building in Comparative Perspective provides an account of long-run institutional development in Latin America that emphasizes the social and political foundations of state-building processes. The study argues that societal dynamics have path-dependent consequences at two critical points: the initial consolidation of national institutions in the wake of independence, and at the time when the 'social question' of mass political incorporation forced its way into the national political agenda across the region during the Great Depression. Dynamics set into motion at these points in time have produced widely varying and stable distributions of state capacity in the region. Marcus J. Kurtz tests this argument using structured comparisons of the post-independence political development of Chile, Peru, Argentina and Uruguay.

Book Modern Argentina the El Dorado of To Day

Download or read book Modern Argentina the El Dorado of To Day written by William Henry Koebel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Argentina, the El Dorado of to-Day: With Notes on Uruguay and Chile In his desire to acknowledge the valuable assistance which friends in Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile have rendered in connection with this small work the author finds himself confronted by a difficulty. Where so many, out of pure goodwill and interest in their native or adopted land, have spared neither time nor trouble in placing their knowledge at his disposal, the compilation of a full list of the names of those to whom he is under an obligation would be impossible. So far as the city of Buenos Aires is concerned, the writer desires to express his cordial thanks for the assistance received at the hands of his compatriots, and more especially to those numerous members of the Strangers', English, Hurlingham, and Lomas clubs who accompanied him in his explorations of the metropolis and its surroundings. As regards the various Estancieros whose guest he had the pleasure of being, it suffices to say that the famed hospitality of the Camp is indeed worthy of its reputation.
