Book Getting it Wrong in Spain

Download or read book Getting it Wrong in Spain written by Susana Belenguer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together different and interdisciplinary perspectives on the Spanish Civil War, its victims, its contentious ending, and its aftermath. In exploring the slow demise of republican ideals, contributors range over many diverse historical and cultural topics — discussing, for instance, the attitudes of both Left and Right to the poet Federico García Lorca and to his assassination, examining the documentary evidence offered in surviving memoirs of the Civil War, and assessing the major characteristics of the new order in Spain under Franco. Cinematic and literary depictions of the Civil War and its consequences are also studied. Other topics investigated include: contemporary French reactions to the Spanish conflict, Stalinist policies towards Spain, the activities and motives of the anarcho-syndicalists and the role of the International Brigades. This collection of essays published on the 75th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, not only places the events and experiences studied within the context of the ‘new state’ of Franco’s Spain, but also offers timely fresh insights into wider European and international issues during what was a period of seismic change in world history. This book was originally published as a special issue of Bulletin of Spanish Studies.

Book Identidad diferencia y ciudadan a en el cine transnacional contempor neo

Download or read book Identidad diferencia y ciudadan a en el cine transnacional contempor neo written by José Luis Fecé and published by Editorial UOC. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Politics of Architecture in Contemporary Argentine Cinema

Download or read book Politics of Architecture in Contemporary Argentine Cinema written by Amanda Holmes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers how architectural landmarks, imagined buildings and urban landscapes take part in the production of meaning in contemporary Argentine cinema. From the iconic Buenos Aires Obelisk to the Hilton International Hotel, the shopping center to the café and the Le Corbusier-designed Curutchet House to the gated community, architecture in these films evokes the political. Tracing architecture’s expression through six films produced since the 1990s—Pizza birra faso, Mundo grúa, Nueve reinas, La niña santa, La antena and El hombre de al lado—Amanda Holmes studies how architecture in cinema elicits political memory, underscores marginalization and class discrepancies, creates nostalgia for neighborhoods and re-evaluates existing communities. Generously illustrated and carefully researched, the book offers an in-depth reading of key contemporary Argentine films and a fresh architectural approach to film analysis.

Book Globalizing Justice for Mass Atrocities

Download or read book Globalizing Justice for Mass Atrocities written by Chandra Lekha Sriram and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major new study examines the developing practice of universal jurisdiction, as well as the broader phenomenon of "globalizing" justice, and its ramifications. With a detailed overview of the contemporary practice of universal jurisdiction, it discerns three trends at work: pure universal jurisdiction, universal jurisdiction "plus", and non-use. It also argues that these disparities in practice should raise serious concerns as to the legitimacy and perceived legitimacy of such globalized justice. It then turns to a further consideration, that of globalized justice, precisely because it takes place far from the locus of the crime, and is therefore "externalized" and may fail to achieve many of its putative goals. In addition, this is a key assessment of civil accountability, through the use of the Alien Tort Claims Act in the United States. It details how the use of civil penalties may offer new avenues for redress, particularly with relation to group accountability, whether that of armed groups or of corporations. However, it balances this approach to accountability with recognition of certain flaws within externalized criminal accountability. This study also focuses on mixed tribunals, or other methods of internationalized justice as viable alternatives, which may avoid some of the problems with external justice, but are themselves far from perfect. Mixed or hybrid tribunals in East Timor and Sierra Leone represent different models of hybrid justice and provide the reader with excellent examples of these new forms of justice in action. This book will be of great interest to all students and scholars of human rights international law and political science.

Book Open Letters to the World Leaders

Download or read book Open Letters to the World Leaders written by María Cristina Azcona and others and published by Cook Communication. This book was released on 2022-05-18 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, made up of letters from each author to World Leaders, has reached the point of being real. We, WWPO and ICP, and our members are saying something here. Now, approaching the flight of this book, we are ready to get our message effectively read by the world's top leaders... We hope that you, the reader, will help us get this book into the hands of our world leaders, as Pope Francis, and other religious leaders in each country and in each cultural group, such as the President of the United States of America or at least the congressmen of that country: also the Kings of the different countries where there is a monarchy, prime ministers, etc. We could add legislators, ambassadors from each country and each person of power in communes, cities, provinces, states and countries. The list is endless. We are now determined to get the book into your hands and will get to work as soon as it is published. At this moment I imagine many people with more or less authority or level of leadership, at an international level, reading this book and perhaps changing their opinion regarding violence. I dream of making the book stop a missile, stopping the hand that was supposed to press the red button that controls it. I dream that this book will become an anti-missile shield that, even if it does not stop a bombing of a building somewhere on the globe, will serve to raise awareness about peace. Now it's your turn: Please, reader - Join me in this dream. and help me stop the war by spreading this message all over the world. Reader: If every inhabitant of the Global Village does the same and embraces us. Time flies and the world needs us united, but also active and coordinated. Sowing peace simply consists of focusing on the roundness of the world and its breadth, and thus embrace it in a huge hug without limiting ourselves to our reference group. María Cristina Azcona
