Book Road User and Mitigation Costs in Highway Pavement Projects

Download or read book Road User and Mitigation Costs in Highway Pavement Projects written by David Leonard Lewis and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1999 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to transportation agency planners; design, construction, and maintenance engineers; and administrators, managers, economists, and other decisionmakers involved in programming highway pavement projects. This synthesis describes current practice with regard to road user and mitigation costs in highway pavement projects. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search of both domestic and foreign publications. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides detailed information on the various methods employed by transportation agencies to estimate user costs. The advantages and disadvantages of each are reported. Information on the various components of user costs (that is, time related, vehicle operating, safety, and environmental costs) is also included. In addition, the study reports on the various mitigation strategies available to agencies to reduce user costs. Information is also provided on how user costs and mitigation strategies have been applied to evaluate different alternatives; and how uncertainties, political considerations, and quality control contribute to the decisionmaking process.

Download or read book The Last Centurion written by John Ringo and published by Baen Publishing Enterprises. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centurions were the guardians of Rome. At the height of the Roman Republic there were over five thousand qualified Roman Centurions in the Legions. To be a Centurion required that, in a mostly illiterate society, one be able to read and write clearly, to be able to convey and create orders, to be capable of not only performing every skill of a Roman soldier but teach every skill of a Roman soldier. Becoming a Centurion required intense physical ability, courage beyond the norm, years of sacrifice and a total devotion to the philosophy which was Rome. When Rome fell to barbarian invaders, there were less than five hundred qualified Centurions. Not because Rome had fewer people but because it had fewer willing to make the sacrifices. And the last Centurions left their shields in the heather and took a barbarian bride . . . We are . . . The Last Centurions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HONEST JOHN is the dramatic unvarnished autobiography of Walker “Bud” Mahurin, an American fighter ace who performed extraordinary feats of skill and bravery in shooting down more than twenty enemy planes in two wars, only to be called a traitor by many after he was forced to sign a germ-warfare confession by the Chinese Communists. In his own words, Col. Mahurin recalls the youth from Fort Wayne, Indiana, who was the leading American ace in Europe until his Thunderbolt was shot down over France, who escaped to fight again in the Pacific and returned in 1945 a much decorated war hero. When hostilities broke out in Korea in 1950, Col. Mahurin wangled his way out of his Pentagon desk job and soon, under the code name of “Honest John,” was flying against the MIGs over Communist skies. Then one fateful day in May, 1952, while perfecting the F-86 dive-bombing technique he himself had pioneered, his Sabre jet was hit by ground fire and crashed in a North Korean rice paddy. Thus began Col. Mahurin’s ordeal, an experience which few Americans have encountered and fewer still have survived. For over a year he was kept in solitary confinement by his captors, interrogated almost constantly and subjected to a veritable arsenal of mental pressures and “invisible tortures” as the Communists sought their elusive confession. In harrowing detail he relates his attempt at suicide and his devices for resisting while still maintaining sanity...

Book Incorporating Intermodalism Into Freeway System Planning

Download or read book Incorporating Intermodalism Into Freeway System Planning written by Carol H. Walters and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research enhances the Dallas System Planning Study, which presented a methodology for selecting the least-cost alternative for freeway improvement projects for the Dallas area. This study includes data from other freeway and High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) systems from around the country. The congestion cost analysis was improved by developing a linear relationship between vehicular volume or flow and delay. Cost estimating procedures for fuel consumption, and delay to passenger and commercial vehicles are included in the alternative analysis. The new methodology is a more complete analysis of the costs and benefits of alternatives, and is applicable to other communities in their selection of freeway improvement alternatives. It also allows the alternative with the least energy consumption to be identified. The results of this project will be implemented to reduce energy consumption in Texas by allowing planning teams to select the least energy intensive alternative being considered for any freeway corridor or system plan.

Book Energy and Air Quality Benefits of Freeway Bottleneck Improvements

Download or read book Energy and Air Quality Benefits of Freeway Bottleneck Improvements written by Carol H. Walters and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freeway bottlenecks cause deterioration in freeway operation. These overcapacity sections of freeway are responsible for increased fuel consumption, increased emissions, and increased delay to motorists. The Texas Department of Transportation has funded and implemented many freeway bottleneck improvement projects around the state to reduce these problems. These projects provide significant benefits in terms of increasing speeds and reducing delays; however, little information exists on quantifying energy and air quality benefits from implementation of bottleneck removal projects. This research investigated the relationships between traffic operating characteristics and environmental factors such as fuel consumption, hydrocarbon emissions, carbon monoxide emissions, and nitrogen oxide emissions. A methodology was developed to analyze existing before and after data from traffic improvement projects that have been implemented. The change in fuel consumption was quantified and guidelines were developed to help predict energy benefits from implementing future freeway bottleneck improvements. The total reduction in fuel usage ranged from 0.0% to 5.2% for the examples studied, with an average of 2.2%. However, the attempt to quantify the air quality benefits was less successful and further research, now underway on a national level, will be required. Current methodology is based on an average speed, and this fails to account for the stop and go nature of driving within congestion upstream of a bottleneck. Under such conditions it has been demonstrated that greater emissions occur, but this has not yet been reliably quantified.

Book Black Rifle II

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher R. Bartocci
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9780889353480
  • Pages : 375 pages

Download or read book Black Rifle II written by Christopher R. Bartocci and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This new book is a sequel to the perennially popular 1987 Collector Grade title The Black Rifle, which is now in its fourth printing. Amazingly, considering the storms of controversy which surrounded the light rifle program in its early days, the M16 has gone on to become the longest-serving shoulder arm in US history, and the benchmark against which any new military rifle, American or otherwise, must now be compared. Even more astonishingly, the M16 today is at the center of a thriving, multi-million-dollar industry involving numerous companies and military agencies who are designing and manufacturing drop-in upper receivers in various configurations and calibers, plus complex rail systems and other high-tech accessories, all based on the M16 3platform2, which thereby grows more firmly established with each passing day. This book chronicles all the new third- and fourth-generation rifle and carbine models which have been introduced by Colt and Diemaco since The Black Rifle was originally published, and describes and depicts the myriad of enhanced sights and rails systems which help make the M16s of today the most versatile, modular and effective combat weapons in the world. It also includes a comprehensive survey of the Colt semi-automatic-only family of commercial and law enforcement products, in .222 Remington, 5.56mm (.223 Remington), 9mm and 7.62x39mm, and an in-depth Reference Compendium of all Colt military and civilian models and components"--Publisher's description.
