Book excerpt: In 1644, as Cromwell's Civil War was raging in England, the celebrated poet John Milton published his Areopagitica, a polemical tract arguing for the freedom of speech and an unlicensed press. The essay's title, “Areopagitica,” was derived from the name of a speech written by the ancient Greek orator Isocrates, Areopagitikos. Addressed to the Parliament of England, the Areopagitica draws on a number of classical and biblical sources to support Milton's cause for the freedom of the press. One of the most obvious examples that the author uses is that of the Areopagus, a judicial council which, in ancient times, had investigated corruption in Athens. In modern times, the Areopagitica is principally appreciated as a cornerstone in the argument for the freedom of speech.

Book Aeropagitica

Book excerpt: From the author of the esteemed epic poem, Paradise Lost, comes one history’s most influential arguments against censorship. John Milton was known for his linguistic genius and political activity, often writing to support his views. During the height of the English Civil War, Milton published Areopagitica. Structured like an oral speech but delivered by pamphlets that Milton illegally printed and distributed, Areopagitica argues against censorship and advocates for the freedom of speech and expression. Published in 1644, Areopagitica is a direct response to the Licensing Order of 1643, opposing it so much that Milton defied the order to print his polemic. The Licensing Order of 1643 required authors to obtain a license from the British Parliament before their work could be published, which meant the government could control what was printed, and censor anything that went against the social norm or criticized their policies. Milton created an argument against this order, providing historical evidence and context against the licensing system, imagining the future harm the order would cause, and advocated for the use of books and literacy. Despite Milton’s avid and passionate argument, the right to a free press was not achieved for nearly fifty years. Still, Areopagitica shaped future philosophical and political ideas in several countries. Areopagitica by John Milton is regarded as an important historical document, an influential text, and a perfect example of the intelligence of the legendary author, John Milton. As it was published in response to major historical events, Areopagitica preserves the emotional responses from English citizens during a crucial time in their history, and is regarded as one of the most influential arguments for free speech. Though John Milton did not achieve his original intentions, Areopagitica set a precedent for the philosophy of free thought and expression, which in turn has shaped the modern idea of freedoms and their implications. This edition of Areopagitica by John Milton features a striking new cover design and is printed in an easy-to-read font, making it both accessible and modern. .

Excerpt: ... the Church and Commonwealth, to have a vigilant eye how Bookes demeane themfelves as well as men; and thereafter to confine, imprifon, and do fharpeft, juftice on them as malefactors: For Books are not abfolutely dead things, but doe contain a potencie of life in them to be as active as that foule was whofe progeny they are; nay they do preferve as in a violl the purest efficacie and extraction of that living intellect that bred them. I inow they are as lively, and as vigorously productive, as thofe fabulous Dragons teeth; and being fown up and down, may chance to fpring up armed men. And yet on the other hand unlesfe warinesse be us'd, as good almost kill a Man as kill a good Book; who kills a Man kills a reafonable creature, Gods Image; but hee who destroyes a good Booke, kills reafon it feife, kills the Image of God, as it were in the eye. Many a man lives a burden to the Earth; but a good Booke is the pretious life-blood of a master fpirit, imbalm'd and treafur'd up on purpofe to a life beyond life. 'Tis true, no age can restore a life, whereof perhaps there is no great losse; and revolutions of ages doe not oft recover the losse ot a rejected truth, for the want of which whole Nations fare the worfe. We fhould be wary therefore what perfecution we raife against the living labours of publick men, how we fpill that feafon'd life of man preferv'd and stor'd up in Books; since we fee a kinde of homicide may be thus committed, fometimes a martyrdome, and if it extend to the whole impression, a kinde of masfacre, whereof the execution ends not in the slaying of an elemental! life, but strikes at that ethereall and fift essence, the breath of reafon it feise, flaies an immortality rather then a life. But lest I fhould be condemn'd of...
