Book excerpt: South of South Beach takes the reader back in time to the 60's and 70's during a time when South Beach was nothing like the glitzy, Art-Deco district it is today but more of a dilapidated, run-down section of real estate where Chris Dundee runs the 5th Street Gym and many transplanted prizefighters, Muhammad Ali among them, roam the streets looking for "something" to while away the hours while they prepare their bodies for the task of fighting another highly-trained boxer who wants to beat their brains out, even as they wish to do much the same to them. The girls stroll parts of South Beach in bikinis and the Beatles have even visited the 5th Street Gym recently; the beat generation is giving way to the hippie, free-love generation so come back in time and visit what today is one of the world's great vacation centers but, at this time during the 1960's was more of a slum or a ghetto --- to avoid at your own peril, especially a small stretch of beach just south of South Beach.

Book Greek and Roman Comedy

  • Author : Shawn O'Bryhim
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2010-01-01
  • ISBN : 0292778821
  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book Greek and Roman Comedy written by Shawn O'Bryhim and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what we know of Greco-Roman comedy comes from the surviving works of just four playwrights—the Greeks Aristophanes and Menander and the Romans Plautus and Terence. To introduce these authors and their work to students and general readers, this book offers a new, accessible translation of a representative play by each playwright, accompanied by a general introduction to the author's life and times, a scholarly article on a prominent theme in the play, and a bibliography of selected readings about the play and playwright. This range of material, rare in a single volume, provides several reading and teaching options, from the study of a single author to an overview of the entire Classical comedic tradition. The plays have been translated for readability and fidelity to the original text by established Classics scholars. Douglas Olson provides the translation and commentary for Aristophanes' Acharnians, Shawn O'Bryhim for Menander's Dyskolos, George Fredric Franco for Plautus' Casina, and Timothy J. Moore for Terence's Phormio.

Book Australian Gothic

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Rayner
  • Publisher : University of Wales Press
  • Release : 2022-06-15
  • ISBN : 1786838907
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Australian Gothic written by Jonathan Rayner and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term ‘Gothic’ has been applied to examples of Australian cinema since the 1970s, often in arbitrary and divergent ways. This book examines a wide range of Australian films to trace their Gothic resemblances, characteristics and meanings. Concentrating on the occurrence of Gothic motifs, characters, landscapes and narratives, it argues for the recognition and relevance of a coherent Gothic heritage in Australian film. Considering a plethora of Gothic representatives in relation to four consistent and illuminating continuities (images of the family, ideas of monstrosity, generic hybridity and the occurrence of the sublime), this study investigates the appearance and asserts the significance of Australian Gothic films within their national, cultural, literary and cinematic traditions.
