Book Pie n Mash and Prefabs My 1950s Childhood

Download or read book Pie n Mash and Prefabs My 1950s Childhood written by Norman Jacobs and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blitz had made many families in the East End of London homeless. One solution was to erect prefabs on fields and open spaces to give temporary accommodation to those who had been bombed out. It was in one of these 'modern' boxes that young Norman Jacobs grew up through the 1950s and 1960s. In a lively, detailed and humorous picture of a postwar Hackney childhood, Norman takes us back to an age of rationing, bomb sites, street markets, colourful characters and camaraderie. And in reminiscing about stodgy school food, jumpers for goalposts, Listen with Mother, greyhound racing, pie 'n' mash, holiday camps, and the advent of American-style burger bars, he provides a glimpse into a way of life that has vanished for ever.Set against a backdrop of Rock 'n' Roll, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the assassination of President Kennedy, funny, poignant and sometimes sad, Norman's is a story full of innocence and happiness that will take you back to the best of times - the days we thought would never end.

  • Publisher : Open Road Media
  • Release : 2019-04-30
  • ISBN : 150405783X
  • Pages : 453 pages

Download or read book Arms and the Women written by Reginald Hill and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pascoe’s wife becomes a moving target in this “delightfully quirky, literate, often explosively funny” mystery in the acclaimed series (Publishers Weekly). Reginald Hill “raised the classical British mystery to new heights” when he introduced pugnacious Yorkshire Det. Inspector Andrew Dalziel and his partner, the callow Sgt. Peter Pascoe (The New York Times Book Review). Their chafing differences in education, manners, technique, and temperament made them “the most remarkable duo in the annals of crime fiction” (Toronto Star). Adapted into a long-running hit show for the BBC, the Gold Dagger Award–winning series is now available as ebooks. Ellie Pascoe is a novelist, former campus radical, overprotective mother—and as an inspector’s wife, on high alert of suspicious behavior. When she thwarts an abduction plot, her husband, Peter, and his partner, Andrew Dalziel, assume a link to one of their past cases. An attack on Ellie’s best friend, Daphne, and a series of threatening letters from Ellie’s foiled kidnappers prove them wrong. Packed off to an isolated seaside safe place, Ellie, Daphne, and their bodyguard, DC Shirley Novello, aren’t about to lie in wait for the culprits’ next move. They’re on the offensive. No matter how calculated their plot of retaliation is, they have no idea just how desperately someone wants Ellie out of the picture. Or how insanely epic the reasons are. Arms and the Women is the 19th book in the Dalziel and Pascoe Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book The Good Die and the Bad Live On

Download or read book The Good Die and the Bad Live On written by Jonathan Dennis and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The good die and the bad live on is a love story many of us will recognise you love someone, they love you, you know you love them more.. Matt Malone is a first year student struggling to meet his academic commitments and kick start a stilted love life. His first date with Liv ends with a shocking, violent attack on them both. They are only saved by Livs unnatural ability to remain calm and take drastic, conclusive action on their attacker. What theyve shared draws them together, their relationship evolves quickly and Matt can barely retain even rudimentary focus on anything else. But it feels unbalanced - Matt can't shake the feeling that the beautiful, self-confident Liv is too good for him and that theres something shes holding back. Livs frequent fierce flashes of temper do little for his peace of mind. The story takes a seminal turn when Liv finally reveals her secret and a devastating attack on Matts life and friends leaves him to slide towards insanity. The book explores themes of love and friendship and what we can endure in their name. We see people obsessed, slaves to their instincts, unable to grasp a sense of reality or retain control of their emotions and actions.

Book The Cove Diary 2

Download or read book The Cove Diary 2 written by Andrew Carne and published by ShieldCrest. This book was released on 2015-07-25 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been four years since The Cove Diary was published, well almost. Since the enclosed pages herein describe two years this rather means it has taken an entire two years to bring this monument of literature into being. Believe me, that is not a long time. On the face of it this time, the book looks like an edifice, a mighty volume, an insurmountable peak, unclimbable by normal common folk. Ordinarily I would agree with you but let us face it, we are talking about The Cove Diary here, not some intellectual, academic or historical masterpiece - you know, proper books. This is a book so vacuous that I am sure it is but a featherweight in your hands and anyway it is also available through the miracle of modern electronics as an e-book which weighs nothing at all. It would be unfair of me to suggest that this is a great work of note or that it is a work of note or even a work. Therefore I will not. It is however full of words, bigger than the last book, thus enabling higher shelves to be reached if you stand on it, and heavier, lending itself to greater impact if thrown. You may well ask, why so big? Why indeed when so many of the world’s great works are slim volumes: Wuthering Heights, 260 pages; To the Lighthouse, 320 pages (Barrett, hard of hearing edition); Noddy goes to Toyland, 32 pages. What they lack in volume they make up with talent in spades; I had to compensate. Additionally many of the copies of the first book ended up in holiday lets in The Cove. Holiday makers told me that they read the book during their two week stays – for free. A book twice the size, then, should deter even the most avid reader from completing it inside an average holiday stay and therefore they would have to buy a copy to finish it. Up top for dancing, I say. So, having established why size matters (in this case, at least) we should proceed to why you should buy it; why your life would be incomplete without a copy in your possession. If you have never heard of The Cove Diary before nor have you been drawn to witness the grievous stain on the Internet that is the daily witterings-on of a dangerously unstable (fear not, I mean in literary terms only) shopkeeper plying his trade in the Far West of Cornwall, I heartily commend this volume to you as a toe in the water of light – very light - entertainment. After all you know no better, do you? If on the other hand you are a seasoned reader of the online issues and, perhaps, the previous book there is no more wool to be pulled over your eyes. Should you purchase a copy of this lump and are thereafter disappointed, you should surely have know better.
