  • Release : 2017-08-21
  • ISBN : 3110516373
  • Pages : 154 pages

Download or read book Commentary on the Gospels written by Fortunatianus Aquileiensis and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012, Lukas Dorfbauer identified a manuscript in Cologne Cathedral Library as a copy of the Commentary on the Gospels by Fortunatianus, bishop of Aquileia in the middle of the fourth century. This discovery enabled him to identify further witnesses to the commentary and works dependent on it. Dorfbauer's critical edition, to be published in the CSEL series in 2017, makes this work available to scholarship for the first time in over a millennium. The discovery of a new work from late antiquity is always a landmark in the history of research. This extensive commentary shines new light on fourth-century biblical interpretation and the exegetical practices and literary work of an African bishop ministering in north Italy in this period. What is more, it appears to be dependent on works by Origen and Victorinus of Poetovio which are no longer preserved. In order to make this important work available to a wider audience, Dr Houghton has prepared an English translation and introduction in conjunction with the COMPAUL project on the earliest commentaries on the New Testament as sources for the biblical text.

Book The Age of Revelation

Download or read book The Age of Revelation written by Elias Boudinot and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boudinot's passionate defense of Christianity is as fresh, forceful and convincing now as the day it first appeared. Authored by Elias Boudinot as a response to Thomas Payne's The Age of Reason, The Age of Revelation is a spirited defense of Christian beliefs and principles from the perspective of a believer who had spent decades in the service of the church. Elias Boudinot was a distinguished statesman whose adherence to traditional beliefs was unstinting throughout his life. Boudinot's response is lengthy and measured, tackling Payne's thesis point-by-point. The tone he strikes is one of calm conviction, wherein he sets out a case for Christianity and against the various skeptical arguments of Payne. He demonstrates that Payne's views are not new or novel, and opines that had Payne not published the popular book Common Sense a few years prior that The Age of Reason would never have experienced a strong reception.

This book deals with - raising children to embrace sexual purity - providing an example of purity in the home - protecting purity in dating (at any age) - and maintaining purity in marriage. Biblical, practical, and concise, The Purity Principle is a one-stop handbook for individuals, families and churches. Some people have given up on purity. Some have never tried. Book excerpt: "Ryken's Worldly Saints offers a fine introduction to seventeenth-century Puritanism in its English and American contexts. The work is rich in quotations from Puritan worthies and is ideally suited to general readers who have not delved widely into Puritan literature. It will also be a source of information and inspiration to those who seek a clearer understanding of the Puritan roots of American Christianity." -Harry Stout, Yale University "...the typical Puritans were not wild men, fierce and freaky, religious fanatics and social extremists, but sober, conscientious, and cultured citizens, persons of principle, determined and disciplined excelling in the domestic virtues, and with no obvious shortcomings save a tendency to run to words when saying anything important, whether to God or to a man. At last the record has been put straight." -J.I. Packer, Regent College "Worldly Saints provides a revealing treasury of primary and secondary evidence for understanding the Puritans, who they were, what they believed, and how they acted. This is a book of value and interest for scholars and students, clergy and laity alike." -Roland Mushat Frye, University of Pennsylvania "A very persuasive...most interesting book...stuffed with quotations from Puritan sources, almost to the point of making it a mini-anthology." -Publishers Weekly "With Worldly Saints, Christians of all persuasions have a tool that provides ready access to the vast treasures of Puritan thought." -Christianity Today "Ryken writes with a vigor and enthusiasm that makes delightful reading-never a dull moment." -Fides et Historia "Worldly Saints provides a valuable picture of Puritan life and values. It should be useful for general readers as well as for students of history and literature." -Christianity and Literature
