Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All superpowers collapse eventually. What will cause America to crumble? Many people believe it will be an EMP attack, a major natural disaster, a terrorist attack, or an economic collapse. Any of those may happen, but one of the most overlooked and yet significant threats facing the United States today is the threat of a cyber-attack or all out cyberwarfare. The good news is that you can be prepared for a cyber-attack by learning about the basic steps you need to take right now. The United States of America is extremely vulnerable to cyber warfare. The reason why is because we are completely dependent on electronic information. Your entire life is tied directly to the cyber world. Just think if the following were to happen: -You can no longer access your money in the bank -Your entire savings and checking account gets wiped out -No more heat or running water being supplied to your home -You can no longer refuel your vehicle -The stock market collapses, creating a second Great Depression Each of these calamities and more are what can and will happen if a major cyber-attack ever occurs on the United States. America is also hugely unprepared for a cyber-attack. For those who do not own a generator, there will be no light, no refrigeration, no running water, and no sewage. Think about that. The devices that you rely on everyday will go dark. The banks will no longer function. Looting will envelop America. Law and order will be thrown out the window. Martial law may even be thrown out the window. In this book we are going to over five specific steps on how you can prepare yourself for cyberwarfare. The steps that we will cover are: 1.What is cyberwarfare? 2.How is cyberwarfare a threat to society and the United States? 3.How will cyberwarfare directly impact the life of the average everyday American? 4.Steps You Need To Take To Prepare For A Cyberattack 5.Steps You Need to Take During A Cyberattack By the end of this book, you will understand what a cyber-attack is, why it's a threat, how it affects you, and how you need to prepare for it.

Book excerpt: "Tomorrow's wars will be fought not just with guns, but with the click of a mouse half a world away that will unleash weaponized software that could take out everything from the power grid to a chemical plant." -The Christian Science Monitor In 1982, a mysterious explosion happened in the far reaches of the Siberian tundra. The incident, a first of its kind, a nation state cyber-attack on a pipeline that caused catastrophic damage. Since that time, escalations of cyber warfare have escalated between many countries and their sponsored actors that have included major cybersecurity incidents such as Stuxnet and many attacks against corporations. But it hasn't stopped with nation state attacks. Cybercriminals have emerged from far corners of the globe to create havoc on individuals, corporations, and government entities. Cyber-crime and cyber-attacks seem to be a never-ending exploitation of technology weaknesses that are causing billions of dollars in losses and beginning to impact life or death situations. Cyberspace is a vast ecosystem of intertwined technologies that brings about noble causes, but hidden in dark corners of cyberspace is a criminal element, and at times in plain sight are military operations. The Coming Cyber War provides insight on the nuances of cyberspace, what executives, boards, and individuals can do to prepare, and what to expect next. _______ "I think every person, especially at the executive level, will find value in reading this book and many will find it astonishing. As Marc alludes to in the end, the challenges for CISOs are not going away and the future cyberwar might be already going on." -ALVIN MILLS, VP, Information Technology & Security, Texas Bankers Association _______ This book highlights cybersecurity practices executives and boards should be aware of and how to interact with their security leader whether a virtual CISO or a CISO on staff. Book The Army and Vietnam

Download or read book The Army and Vietnam written by Andrew F. Krepinevich Jr. and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1986-05-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many senior army officials still claim that if they had been given enough soldiers and weapons, the United States could have won the war in Vietnam. In this probing analysis of U.S. military policy in Vietnam, career army officer and strategist Andrew F. Krepinevich, Jr., argues that precisely because of this mindset the war was lost before it was fought. The army assumed that it could transplant to Indochina the operational methods that had been successful in the European battle theaters of World War II, an approach that proved ill-suited to the way the Vietnamese Communist forces fought. Theirs was a war of insurgency, and counterinsurgency, Krepinevich contends, requires light infantry formations, firepower restraint, and the resolution of political and social problems within the nation. To the very end, top military commanders refused to recognize this. Krepinevich documents the deep division not only between the American military and civilian leaders over the very nature of the war, but also within the U.S. Army itself. Through extensive research in declassified material and interviews with officers and men with battlefield experience, he shows that those engaged in the combat understood early on that they were involved in a different kind of conflict. Their reports and urgings were discounted by the generals, who pressed on with a conventional war that brought devastation but little success. A thorough analysis of the U.S. Army's role in the Vietnam War, The Army and Vietnam demonstrates with chilling persuasiveness the ways in which the army was unprepared to fight—lessons applicable to today's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Book Proceedings of a Workshop on Deterring Cyberattacks

Download or read book Proceedings of a Workshop on Deterring Cyberattacks written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world of increasing dependence on information technology, the prevention of cyberattacks on a nation's important computer and communications systems and networks is a problem that looms large. Given the demonstrated limitations of passive cybersecurity defense measures, it is natural to consider the possibility that deterrence might play a useful role in preventing cyberattacks against the United States and its vital interests. At the request of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the National Research Council undertook a two-phase project aimed to foster a broad, multidisciplinary examination of strategies for deterring cyberattacks on the United States and of the possible utility of these strategies for the U.S. government. The first phase produced a letter report providing basic information needed to understand the nature of the problem and to articulate important questions that can drive research regarding ways of more effectively preventing, discouraging, and inhibiting hostile activity against important U.S. information systems and networks. The second phase of the project entailed selecting appropriate experts to write papers on questions raised in the letter report. A number of experts, identified by the committee, were commissioned to write these papers under contract with the National Academy of Sciences. Commissioned papers were discussed at a public workshop held June 10-11, 2010, in Washington, D.C., and authors revised their papers after the workshop. Although the authors were selected and the papers reviewed and discussed by the committee, the individually authored papers do not reflect consensus views of the committee, and the reader should view these papers as offering points of departure that can stimulate further work on the topics discussed. The papers presented in this volume are published essentially as received from the authors, with some proofreading corrections made as limited time allowed.

Book Threatcasting

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian David Johnson
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2022-06-01
  • ISBN : 303102575X
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book Threatcasting written by Brian David Johnson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impending technological advances will widen an adversary’s attack plane over the next decade. Visualizing what the future will hold, and what new threat vectors could emerge, is a task that traditional planning mechanisms struggle to accomplish given the wide range of potential issues. Understanding and preparing for the future operating environment is the basis of an analytical method known as Threatcasting. It is a method that gives researchers a structured way to envision and plan for risks ten years in the future. Threatcasting uses input from social science, technical research, cultural history, economics, trends, expert interviews, and even a little science fiction to recognize future threats and design potential futures. During this human-centric process, participants brainstorm what actions can be taken to identify, track, disrupt, mitigate, and recover from the possible threats. Specifically, groups explore how to transform the future they desire into reality while avoiding an undesired future. The Threatcasting method also exposes what events could happen that indicate the progression toward an increasingly possible threat landscape. This book begins with an overview of the Threatcasting method with examples and case studies to enhance the academic foundation. Along with end-of-chapter exercises to enhance the reader’s understanding of the concepts, there is also a full project where the reader can conduct a mock Threatcasting on the topic of “the next biological public health crisis.” The second half of the book is designed as a practitioner’s handbook. It has three separate chapters (based on the general size of the Threatcasting group) that walk the reader through how to apply the knowledge from Part I to conduct an actual Threatcasting activity. This book will be useful for a wide audience (from student to practitioner) and will hopefully promote new dialogues across communities and novel developments in the area.
