Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Are There Classes in America? NO argument is required to show that the introduction of slavery meant the introduction of caste and class. The slave and the slave owner did not belong to the same class. They were not social equals. They did not pass their time in each others' society; they did not live in the same kind of houses; they did not eat the same kind of food; they did not wear the same kind of clothing; the daughter Of the slave owner did not marry the son of the slave; nor did the daughter of the slave marry the son of the slave owner. The slave and the slave owner did not have equal rights; neither did they possess equal opportunities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book American College Course Classic Reprint

Download or read book American College Course Classic Reprint written by Seymour Eaton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American College Course As stated in the Introductory Note to the first volume of the present series, these books are in reality, as their names imply, popular studies. Everything in them has been written or prepared with the needs of the general reader or student in view as distinct from those of the professed special student. The intention has been to afford such information respecting the authors selected for treatment as will make the study of them not only a pleasure, but an easy pleasure. To that end broad and general views have been presented rather than minute and special ones. Pains have been taken to illustrate the personalities of the authors; to show them as they were as men and citizens, and in their private life and home relations. Very useful, we trust, will be found the notes prepared for readers for use in their own individual studies of the authors. These notes are sufficiently complete to meet the needs of all classes of readers - those who desire to go pretty far in their studies, as well as those who have time and opportunity to go only a little way. Although published in three volumes, these studies constitute one continuous series. Ten authors have been selected for treatment, the ten greatest names in American literature. The student-reader should not rest satisfied until he has made a pretty thorough acquaintance with the whole ten. Book American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting 1834 1853

Download or read book American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting 1834 1853 written by Meredith L. McGill and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The antebellum period has long been identified with the belated emergence of a truly national literature. And yet, as Meredith L. McGill argues, a mass market for books in this period was built and sustained through what we would call rampant literary piracy: a national literature developed not despite but because of the systematic copying of foreign works. Restoring a political dimension to accounts of the economic grounds of antebellum literature, McGill unfolds the legal arguments and political struggles that produced an American "culture of reprinting" and held it in place for two crucial decades. In this culture of reprinting, the circulation of print outstripped authorial and editorial control. McGill examines the workings of literary culture within this market, shifting her gaze from first and authorized editions to reprints and piracies, from the form of the book to the intersection of book and periodical publishing, and from a national literature to an internally divided and transatlantic literary marketplace. Through readings of the work of Dickens, Poe, and Hawthorne, McGill seeks both to analyze how changes in the conditions of publication influenced literary form and to measure what was lost as literary markets became centralized and literary culture became stratified in the early 1850s. American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting, 1834-1853 delineates a distinctive literary culture that was regional in articulation and transnational in scope, while questioning the grounds of the startlingly recent but nonetheless powerful equation of the national interest with the extension of authors' rights.

The evening school occupied a prominent position in the educational life of the period, and, therefore, deserves more than passing mention. With the view of making its records more accessible to the student of early American education, this study will present a somewhat detailed, yet condensed, source-account of its essential features. Book Privilege and Democracy in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Privilege and Democracy in America Classic Reprint written by Frederic C. Howe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Privilege and Democracy in America Down to the beginning of the nineteenth century government was merely the will of a class. Politics mirrored the wish of the privileged orders. And the motive which inspired the governing classes was primarily an economic one. This interpretation of politics has only begun to influence the writing of history. Yet in this motive is to be found the cause of wars and of peace, of intrigue and of diplomacy, of force and of fraud, of practically all legislation relating to religion, taxation, industry, and the rela tion of classes. The struggles of kings and parlia ments, of burghers and peasants, of cities and over lords had their origin in the desire to use the agencies of government for the advantage of one or the other of the contending orders. We have only to study the Parliamentary struggle which has just closed in Great Britain, to see a confirmation of this fact. In this instance the conflict was carried on by peaceful means. But the motive of the struggle was the same. It was a warfare of classes, organized through parties instead of with armed retainers, but bent on the control of the govern ment for economic advantage. Download or read book Disadvantaged Classes in American Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Carl C. Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disadvantaged Classes in American Agriculture The title, Disadvantaged Classes in American Agriculture, one of a number of possible choices, was selected because it most nearly de scribes the arrangement cf data, chapter by chapter, than any other title that was formulated. But it does not imply that the classes referred to are classes in the sense of castes, or that there is no social inter change between the farm families being discussed and other farm families in the same community, or with other farm families throughout the Nation. Rural poverty has existed in considerable magnitude in the United States for a long time. The depression served to reveal the areas in which this poverty was most prevalent and most nearly chronic. Different agencies of the Federal Government in recent years have analyzed these conditions and areas from such standpoints as the land, farm income, and soil erosion. It is the purpose of this report to describe these conditions and areas in terms of farm families and the conditions under which they live.
