Book Are 3D Printed Homes a Viable Alternativa for Emergency Housing Needs

Download or read book Are 3D Printed Homes a Viable Alternativa for Emergency Housing Needs written by Erni Basulin and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to define the opportunities and threats for the implementation of three-dimensional construction printing technology in the emergency housing industry. In the present days, because of the refugee crisis, there is an urgent need in sufficient emergency shelters, but traditional building solutions cannot cope with the influx of coming refugees. During the research, current emergency housing solutions such as tents, timber-framed houses, modular houses, as well as mass-wall constructions were analyzed. Moreover, the new additive manufacturing methods like Contour Crafting were discussed in detail. The SWOT analysis, as well as the comparative analysis were utilized in order to show the differences between Contour Crafting method and conventional construction, as well as the advantages of new technologies over traditional building methods. Despite the convenience of novel technology, several limitations to its implementation were defined. Primary barriers such as technology development, state regulations and criteria on emergency housing types, as well as inferior constraints - bureaucracy and building industry requirements are highlighted in details. The author concludes that currently, the Contour Crafting method is not a viable solution, however in seven to ten years this technology is more likely to be utilized for durable emergency shelters rather than conventional construction because of reduced project costs, shorter lead times and lower environmental impact.

Download or read book Eco Homes written by Doctor Jenny Pickerill and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely understood that good, affordable eco-housing needs to be at the heart of any attempt to mitigate or adapt to climate change. This is the first book to comprehensively explore eco-housing from a geographical, social and political perspective. It starts from the premise that we already know how to build good eco-houses and we already have the technology to retrofit existing housing. Despite this, relatively few eco-houses are being built. Featuring over thirty case studies of eco-housing in Britain, Spain, Thailand, Argentina and the United States, Eco-Homes examines the ways in which radical changes to our houses – such as making them more temporary, using natural materials, or relying on manual heating and ventilation systems – require changes in how we live. As such, it argues, it is not lack of technology or political will that is holding us back from responding to climate change, but deep-rooted cultural and social understandings of our way of life and what we expect our houses to do for us.

Book Strain Hardening Cement Based Composites

Download or read book Strain Hardening Cement Based Composites written by Viktor Mechtcherine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Strain-Hardening Cement-Based Composites (SHCC4), that was held at the Technische Universität Dresden, Germany from 18 to 20 September 2017. The conference focused on advanced fiber-reinforced concrete materials such as strain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCC), textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) and high-performance fiber-reinforced cement-based composites (HPFRCC). All these new materials exhibit pseudo-ductile behavior resulting from the formation of multiple, fine cracks when subject to tensile loading. The use of such types of fiber-reinforced concrete could revolutionize the planning, development, dimensioning, structural and architectural design, construction of new and strengthening and repair of existing buildings and structures in many areas of application. The SHCC4 Conference was the follow-up of three previous successful international events in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2009, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2011, and Dordrecht, The Netherlands in 2014.

Book Gravel Roads

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Cardboard in Architecture

Download or read book Cardboard in Architecture written by Mick Eekhout and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Building Technology at the Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft is studying and developing cardboard as a potential building material on a broad, systematic and where possible comprehensive basis. The guiding research question is: "How can cardboard be used in both architectural and structural terms as a fully fledged building material, making use of the material-specific properties?" An exploratory phase from 2003 to 2005 - including an outdoor pilot structure (multi-shed), a pilot pavilion accommodating, an exhibition, workshops on resistance to fire and to damp, a first patent (KCPK), the design of an interior wall (Besin) and the publication of this book - was concluded by an international symposium attended by both the paper industry and the building industry. This publication comprises the report on that symposium.

Book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
