Book excerpt: Winner of Best Literary Food Writing (in English) category at the World Cookbook Fair, this is a lively journey discovering Ireland's food, people and music. If Peta hadn't known of her Irish ancestry, her love of potatoes would have betrayed it. Peta always connects with a place through its food, and in visiting the country of her forebears she set herself a difficult task. But it didn't take long for Peta to find the world-class restaurants hidden up windy cobbled streets, to savour the delights of grand country cooking, high-quality primary produce and seafood from sleepy fishing villages. She dances her way between such traditional fare as Guinness, barmbrack and black puddings and refined fusion dishes of roasted tomato and goat cheese charlotte with lentils and basil oil and cured wild salmon topped off with slugs of fine Irish whiskey. In this wonderful account of travelling through Ireland, Peta searches for its gastronomic heartland, introduces her intriguing relatives, discovers her love of music is intricately intertwined with Irish social life and eating habits, and spins tales both traditional and true.

Book Computer Theology

  • Author : Timothy Jurgensen
  • Publisher : Midori Press LLC
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 0980182115
  • Pages : 470 pages

Download or read book Computer Theology written by Timothy Jurgensen and published by Midori Press LLC. This book was released on 2008 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers are complex tools of the human species. To make them work well for us, we have to specify their actions in very great detail. When properly instructed, networks of computers take on the trappings of human social orders derived from the physiological characteristics and capabilities of our species. To create a social order, we engage in grouping mechanisms through which the actions of the individuals within the group are influenced. From a technical perspective, such grouping mechanisms form the trust environments within which we can effect policy. Historically, the most comprehensive such environments have been formed by religions. Within a specific religion, the policy framework is established by a statement of theology. So, if we connect all the dots, when we want to tell our computers how to act in a manner paralleling human social orders, we must define for them a theology. So goes the rationale explored in great detail by the authors of Computer Theology. Based on their combined tenure of almost a century working in the realms of computer systems and their ubiquitous networks, du Castel and Jurgensen have expressed both social and computer systems through the same concepts. The result offers a unique perspective on the interconnection between people and machines that we have come to understand as the World Wide Web.

Book The Costs of War

Download or read book The Costs of War written by John V. Denson and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest accomplishment of Western civilization is arguably the achievement of individual liberty through limits on the power of the state. In the war-torn twentieth century, we rarely hear that one of the main costs of armed conflict is long-term loss of liberty to winners and losers alike. Beyond the obvious and direct costs of dead and wounded soldiers, there is the lifetime struggle of veterans to live with their nightmares and their injuries; the hidden economic costs of inflation, debts, and taxes; and more generally the damages caused to our culture, our morality, and to civilization at large. The new edition is now available in paperback, with a number of new essays. It represents a large-scale collective effort to pierce the veils of myth and propaganda to reveal the true costs of war, above all, the cost to liberty. Central to this volume are the views of Ludwig von Mises on war and foreign policy. Mises argued that war, along with colonialism and imperialism, is the greatest enemy of freedom and prosperity, and that peace throughout the world cannot be achieved until the central governments of the major nations become limited in scope and power. In the spirit of these theorems by Mises, the contributors to this volume consider the costs of war generally and assess specific corrosive effects of major American wars since the Revolution. The first section includes chapters on the theoretical and institutional dimensions of the relationship between war and society, including conscription, infringements on freedom, the military as an engine of social change, war and literature, and the right of citizens to bear arms. The second group includes reconsiderations of Lincoln and Churchill, an analysis of the anti-interventionist idea in American politics, a discussion of the meaning of the "just war," an assessment of how World War I changed the course of Western civilization, and finally two eyewitness accounts of the true horrors of actual combat by veterans of World War II. The Costs of War is unique in its combination of historical scope and timeliness for current debates about foreign policy and military intervention. It will be of interest to historians, political scientists, economists, and sociologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guild of Food Writer’s Awards, Highly Commended in ‘General Cookbook’ category (2021) Root, Stem, Leaf, Flower is a cookbook about plants – it's about making the most of the land's bounty in your everyday cooking. Making small changes to the way we cook and eat can both lessen the impact we have on the environment and dramatically improve our health and wellbeing: good for us and for future generations to come. Making plants and vegetables the focus of your meals can improve your cooking exponentially - they provide a feast of flavours, colours and textures. Root, Stem, Leaf, Flower is a true celebration of seasonal vegetables and fruit, packed with simple and surprisingly quick vegetarian recipes. With roots, we think of the crunch of carrots, celeriac, beetroot. From springtime stems like our beloved asparagus and rhubarb, through leaves of every hue (kale, radicchio, chard), when the blossoms become the fruits of autumn – apples, pears, plums – the food year is marked by growth, ripening and harvest. With 120 original recipes, every dish captured by acclaimed photographer Andrew Montgomery, and Gill's ideas for using the very best fresh ingredients, Root, Stem, Leaf, Flower is a thoughtful, inspiring collection of recipes that you'll want to come back to again and again. Praise for Time: "I love Gill Meller's food: it is completely his own, and ranges from the (unpretentiously) rarified to the smile-inducingly cosy; indeed, he often seems to fuse the two... his recipes make me want to run headlong into the kitchen." – Nigella Lawson "Gill Meller's latest cookbook, Time, is poetic and romantic – a string of beautiful recipes guide you through the seasons. – Yotam Ottolenghi, Guardian Praise for Gather: "My book of the autumn and possibly of the year... Gather is a perfect expression of something food writers have been trying to define for the past three decades: modern British cooking." – Diana Henry "Just stunning. There's no one I'd rather cook for me than Gill and there's not a recipe here I wouldn't eagerly devour." – Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
