Book Getting to Know ArcView GIS

Download or read book Getting to Know ArcView GIS written by Environmental Systems Research Institute (Redlands, Calif.) and published by ESRI, Inc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geographic information systems (GIS) help visualize information in new ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends not visible with other popular systems. This book is a nontechnical introduction to GIS technology explaining what it is, how it works, and who uses it. It offers illustrated, step-by-step procedures for using ArcView GIS Version 3.1 software to perform dozens of GIS tasks. The book is full of exercises that can also be worked on by using the software and data provided on the CD-ROM. Readers will come away with a solid understanding of basic GIS concepts and the skills needed to embark on an ArcView GIS project of their own.

Book Statistical Analysis with ArcView GIS

Download or read book Statistical Analysis with ArcView GIS written by Jay Lee and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001-05-16 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical analysis of geographic data has been greatly enhanced in recent years with the advent of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software. Yet GIS users have struggles to synchronize their applications of spatial information with practical, quantitative statistics. ArcView, one of the most powerful GIS-compatible systems, has become the most popular software among geographers precisely because of its capacity for spatial-quantitative synthesis. Now geographers Jay Lee and David Wong have produced the first handbook for applied ArcView use, bringing the theoretical underpinnings of classical statistics into the earth science environment. Employing points, lines, and polygons to model real-world geographic forms, this easy-to-use resource provides geographers with a valuable bridge between theory and the software necessary to apply it. It contains sections on point distribution, point pattern analysis, linear features, network analysis, and spatial autocorrelation analysis. Statistical Analysis with ArcView GIS also features: Examples that show steps of statistical calculations-as well as ways to interpret the results. More than 100 illustrations, including statistical charts, maps, and ArcView screen captures. Helpful end-of-chapter references. Suitable for professionals as well as students of geography, this book is an important tool for anyone involved in the statistical analysis of GIS data.

Book Geographic Information Systems in Fisheries Management and Planning

Download or read book Geographic Information Systems in Fisheries Management and Planning written by Gertjan de Graaf and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many fishery biologists and policy makers involved in inland fisheries management and planning are unaware of GIS technology and its potential for fisheries planning and management. The FAO Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service (FIRI) has been active for the last 19 years in promoting the use of GIS and remote sensing in fisheries and aquaculture. Promotional activities have been carried out through training, projects, field missions, and oral presentations and publications. However, a manual to use along with GIS software for the fisheries biologists in the field explaining GIS in a way that is understandable to non-GIS users had not been produced until now. This manual was written to overcome this knowledge-gap, it is a "do-it-yourself" manual giving a short introduction to GIS software and its applications in fishery science. The overall objective of this manual is to encourage fishery managers to use this tool (GIS) to foster the sustainable use of natural resources. There are five main sections in the manual: GIS concepts and functions and key tools provided by ArcView 3.x, Geographic coordinate system and map projections, Raster data and analysis, Regression analysis, and Application case studies. All sections are accompanied by exercises that have been designed to illustrate key applications of GIS in inland and marine fisheries management. Also, a custom-designed ArcView grid regression extension is included to show the integration of GIS with surplus production models.
