Book A Catalog of Viral Diseases of Insects and Mites

Download or read book A Catalog of Viral Diseases of Insects and Mites written by Mauro E. Martignoni and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive catalog of viral diseases of two large groups of arthropods updates the previous surveys of the world's literature published by Hughes in 1957 and by Martignoni and Langston in 1960. This computer-based catalog lists over 600 species of insects and mites, each reported to have one or more of 21 viral diseases or disease groups, for a total of over 900 host-virus records. The catalog consists of two lists. In the first one the hosts are listed in taxonomic sequence (order, family, genus, species). Species appear alphabetically within each genus, genera alphabetically within each family, and families alphabetically within each order. In the second list, the hosts are listed alphabetically by specific names, without consideration of the higher taxa, The host-virus records are stored on computer tape; additions and corrections to the master file can be made easily, and thus the catalog can be revised without much effort.

Book Changes And Disturbance In Tropical Rain Forest In South East Asia

Download or read book Changes And Disturbance In Tropical Rain Forest In South East Asia written by Tim H Clutton-brock and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-09-27 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Views on the dynamics of tropical forests are changing rapidly with the recognition that their environment is variable on the decadal to century scale. Fluctuating climatic conditions partly determine tropical forest structure, species composition and dynamics. Tropical communities are also highly contingent in space and time with respect to site and historical factors. Tropical forests have experienced to some degree this disturbance regime in the past, but climatologists are now predicting increasingly frequent extreme events in the new century. The combination of increasing deforestation and land-use conversion by man plus an increasingly variable environment means a situation that could be very difficult to manage.

Book Thyretini of Africa

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lukasz Przybylowicz
  • Publisher : Apollo Books
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9788788757910
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Thyretini of Africa written by Lukasz Przybylowicz and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This entomology book is the first comprehensive tool facilitating the identification of thyretines, the unique group of large arctiids (Arctiidae: Syntominae) restricted almost exclusively to the Afrotropical region. The 194 currently recognized species are catalogued and illustrated. Information on the original description, type locality, and type deposition for each of 332 species-group names is given. Seven genus-group names and 62 species-group names are synonymized. Three genus-group names and eight species-group names are excluded from Thyretini and transferred to another groups of arctiids. The diagnostic features of each species are presented, as well as short information on early stages, biology, and known distribution. The male and female genitalia of most of the species are illustrated by half-tone photographs, and whole moths by color photographs arranged in six plates. When possible, the types are illustrated rather than other specimens. Also included is a complete bibliography treating various aspects of the nomenclature, taxonomy, faunistics, biology, or other information concerning Thyretini.

Book Gradients in a Tropical Mountain Ecosystem of Ecuador

Download or read book Gradients in a Tropical Mountain Ecosystem of Ecuador written by Erwin Beck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-24 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating work that provides a wealth of information on one of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems. This is the result of investigations by almost 30 groups of researchers from various disciplines. They performed ecosystem analyses following two gradients: an altitudinal gradient and a gradient of land use intensity and ecosystem regeneration following human use. Based on these analyses, this volume discusses these findings in a huge variety of subject areas.

Book Tiger Moths and Woolly Bears

Download or read book Tiger Moths and Woolly Bears written by William E. Conner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moths of the family Arctiidae, with their brilliant coloration, spectacular courtship rituals, and bizarre defenses, are wonders of the natural world. Unpalatable by virtue of secondary chemicals acquired from their hostplants, these moths advertise their defenses by their coloration and often mimic butterflies, wasps, bees, stinkbugs, and even cockroaches. They have ears with which they hear the echolocation of bats, and some answer with aposematic warnings, while some may jam the bats' sonar. This book, the first written on this fascinating group, documents how tiger moths and woolly bears-the adults and larvae of the Arctiidae-flourish in a world rife with predators, parasites, and competitors. The contributing authors' accounts, each written by a recognized expert in the field, weave together seminal studies on phylogeny and behavior, natural history, chemical communication, mate choice and sexual selection, chemical ecology, parasite-host relationships, self medication, animal orientation, predator-prey interactions, mimicry, adaptive coloration, speciation, biodiversity, and more.

Book Moths of Western North America

Download or read book Moths of Western North America written by Jerry A. Powell and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects boast incredible diversity, and this book treats an important component of the western insect biota that has not been summarized before—moths and their plant relationships. There are about 8,000 named species of moths in our region, and although most are unnoticed by the public, many attract attention when their larvae create economic damage: eating holes in woolens, infesting stored foods, boring into apples, damaging crops and garden plants, or defoliating forests. In contrast to previous North American moth books, this volume discusses and illustrates about 25% of the species in every family, including the tiny species, making this the most comprehensive volume in its field. With this approach it provides access to microlepidoptera study for biologists as well as amateur collectors. About 2,500 species are described and illustrated, including virtually all moths of economic importance, summarizing their morphology, taxonomy, adult behavior, larval biology, and life cycles.
