Book United States Arctic Interests

Download or read book United States Arctic Interests written by W.E. Westermeyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elliot L. Richardson The United States is finally awakening to the fact that it has a major stake in the future of the Arctic. Recognition of the national importance of the Arctic has been slow in coming despite the resource wealth that Arctic Alaska has thus far yielded. Although the United States has had strategic interests in the Arctic since World War II and active oil and gas interests there since the discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay in 1968, its interest in the Arctic has been low in comparison with that of its Arctic neighbors, Canada and the Soviet Union. What has been described by some as an attitude of neglect toward the Arctic is now changing. The notion of change has become central in most current discussions about the future of the Arctic. It is apparent that the Arctic region is entering a period of greatly accelerated economic, social, strategic, and is political change. The driving force behind the changes taking place resource development activity, and although the present scale of this activity is not inconsequential, it is small in comparison to its projected growth in the next two decades. In short, the Arctic is about to come alive. However, knowledge of the Arctic and experience in the Arctic is comparatively limited. Moreover, competing interests and differing val ues exist among national groups and between countries in the Arctic, just as they do in the lower latitudes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Challenge of Arctic Shipping presents a collection of candid essays on the future of Arctic waters. A number of distinguished contributors address critical issues in Arctic development examining the implications for both policy-making in the North and the impact of that policy on native people. The intricacies of decision-making in an atmosphere of uncertainty are explored in detail, as is the impact of access to information, influence, and power. The Challenge of Arctic Shipping also examines activities and events associated with commercial proposals to develop and transport hydrocarbons through environmentally sensitive waters. The editors observe that the resulting political maneuvering is evidence that new approaches to this and other problems of the North are needed.

Book Ice humanities

    Book Details:
  • Author : Klaus Dodds
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2022-08-02
  • ISBN : 1526157764
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Ice humanities written by Klaus Dodds and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-02 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ice humanities is a pioneering collection of essays that tackles the existential crisis posed by the planet's diminishing ice reserves. By the end of this century, we will likely be facing a world where sea ice no longer reliably forms in large areas of the Arctic Ocean, where glaciers have not just retreated but disappeared, where ice sheets collapse, and where permafrost is far from permanent. The ramifications of such change are not simply geophysical and biochemical. They are societal and cultural, and they are about value and loss. Where does this change leave our inherited ideas, knowledge and experiences of ice, snow, frost and frozen ground? How will human, animal and plant communities superbly adapted to cold and high places cope with less ice, or even none at all? The ecological services provided by ice are breath-taking, providing mobility, water and food security for hundreds of millions of people around the world, often Indigenous and vulnerable communities. The stakes could not be higher. Drawing on sources ranging from oral testimony to technical scientific expertise, this path-breaking collection sets out a highly compelling claim for the emerging field of ice humanities, convincingly demonstrating that the centrality of ice in human and non-human life is now impossible to ignore.

Book The Energy Squeeze

Download or read book The Energy Squeeze written by Bruce Willson and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1980-01-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this book was published in 1980, the Energy Crisis of the 1970s continued to cast a long shadow across Canadian society. Its bleak analysis of the energy future shows just how deep that shadow was--and is. Wilson's tough, uncompromising study remains important reading for anyone who wants to understand what's at stake in the politics of energy and what needs to be done by government and industry to ensure that the economy of the future will continue to run when non-renewable sources of energy run out. The Energy Squeeze combines detailed analysis of Canada's energy future with prescriptions for action--nationalized supply and pricing, for example--that reflect the crisis atmosphere of the early 1980s.

Book Arctic Offshore Engineering

Download or read book Arctic Offshore Engineering written by Andrew Palmer and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing need to construct engineering structures in the Arctic seas. The requirement is principally generated by the oil and gas industry, because of the substantial reserves that are known to exist offshore in the Beaufort Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Barents Sea, the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Sakhalin, the Canadian Arctic, and almost certainly elsewhere. Structures have to withstand the severe environmental forces generated by sea ice, a subject that is developing rapidly but is still far from completely understood. Underwater pipelines have to be safe against ice gouging and strudel scour, but also have to be constructed safely and economically. The social and human environment has to be understood and respected. This important book intentionally takes a broad view, and vividly accounts for the many and often subtle interactions between the different factors. It is illustrated by case studies of actual projects.
