Book The Arctic Observing Network

Download or read book The Arctic Observing Network written by Thomas R. Calahan and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2007 the US Interagency Research Policy Committee (IARPC) called for the development of an Arctic Observing Network (AON) to understand the causes and consequences of Arctic change. Under the joint leadership of NOAA and NSF, Committee staff prepared Arctic Observing Network (AON): Toward a US Contribution to Pan-Arctic Observing, a summary of ongoing and future Federal Arctic observing activities with a strategy for enhanced co-ordination and integration of these activities. This document constitutes the biennial update of the US Arctic Research Plan, focusing on observing needs. Enhanced co-ordination and integration of observing activities, and data and information management, will enable the agencies to respond with increased agility to the science questions posed by the Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) program: m1 Is the Arctic system moving to a new state? 2 To what extent is the Arctic system predictable, i.e., what are the potential accuracies and/or uncertainties in predictions of relevant Arctic variables over different time scales? 3To what extent can recent and ongoing climate changes be attributed to anthropogenic forcing rather than to natural modes of variability? 4 What is the direction and relative importance of system feedbacks? 5 How are terrestrial and marine ecosystems and ecosystem services affected by environmental change and its interactions with human activities? 6 How do cultural and socio-economic systems interact with Arctic environmental change? 7 What are the most consequential links between the Arctic and Earth systems?

Book Designing Optimizing and Implementing an Arctic Observing Network

Download or read book Designing Optimizing and Implementing an Arctic Observing Network written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Executive Summary: The Arctic has become a focus of scientific research through its role as both an amplifier and driver of global climate change. Policy imperatives involving Arctic climate change range from marine shipping to resource extraction, the vulnerability of civil and private infrastructure, and the preservation of endangered biotic and cultural assets. Just as the environment and decision-making contexts are rapidly changing, so has the scope and nature of observing strategies to monitor and understand Arctic system change. The concept of an integrated Arctic observatory dates to the late 1990s with early planning of the Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) initiative. The multidisciplinary Arctic Observing Network (AON) has been implemented with guidance from SEARCH workshop reports, the 2006 "Toward an Integrated Arctic Observing Network" report by the National Research Council, and meetings organized through the SEARCH Observing Change Panel. The International Polar Year (IPY) of 2007-2008 provided substantial resources to put in place key pieces of an AON. We are now ready to review options and approaches to guide observing system design and optimizing a sustainable system. This Arctic Observation Network Design and Implementation (ADI) Task Force report provides guidance to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other agencies interested in the AON. This report focuses on the continued development of the AON, with the following major goals: ? assess the present state and near-term implementation plans of the AON and related efforts, ? synthesize lessons learned from other observing systems, ? identify and assess promising approaches and tools for system design and optimization, ? offer and discuss specific design options and approaches, and ? provide a summary of ADI Task Force findings and recommendations. The ADI Task Force efforts to engage a broad set of contributors included a community survey and two workshops (in 2009 and 2012) to discuss observing systems and approaches. Outcomes of the workshops and community survey are provided in this report; these serve as the foundation for the Task Force recommendations"--Page 1.

Book Integrating Multiscale Observations of U S Waters

Download or read book Integrating Multiscale Observations of U S Waters written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-04-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is essential to life for humans and their food crops, and for ecosystems. Effective water management requires tracking the inflow, outflow, quantity and quality of ground-water and surface water, much like balancing a bank account. Currently, networks of ground-based instruments measure these in individual locations, while airborne and satellite sensors measure them over larger areas. Recent technological innovations offer unprecedented possibilities to integrate space, air, and land observations to advance water science and guide management decisions. This book concludes that in order to realize the potential of integrated data, agencies, universities, and the private sector must work together to develop new kinds of sensors, test them in field studies, and help users to apply this information to real problems.

Book Arctic Human Development Report

Download or read book Arctic Human Development Report written by Joan Nymand Larsen and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of the second volume of the AHDR – Arctic Human Development Report: Regional Processes and Global Linkages – are to provide an update to the first AHDR (2004) in terms of an assessment of the state of Arctic human development; to highlight the major trends and changes unfolding related to the various issues and thematic areas of human development in the Arctic over the past decade; and, based on this assessment, to identify policy relevant conclusions and key gaps in knowledge, new and emerging Arctic success stories. The production of AHDR-II on the tenth anniversary of the first AHDR makes it possible to move beyond the baseline assessment to make valuable comparisons and contrasts across a decade of persistent and rapid change in the North. It addresses critical issues and emerging challenges in Arctic living conditions, quality of life in the North, global change impacts and adaptation, and Indigenous livelihoods. The assessment contributes to our understanding of the interplay and consequences of physical and social change processes affecting Arctic residents’ quality of life, at both the regional and global scales. It shows that the Arctic is not a homogenous region. Impacts of globalization and environmental change differ within and between regions, between Indigenous and non-Indigenous northerners, between genders and along other axes.

Book Advances in Biosensors Vol 1 b w

Download or read book Advances in Biosensors Vol 1 b w written by Sergey Yurish and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every research and development in biosensors (as well as in any other research fields) is started from a state-of-the-art review. Such review is one of the most labor- and time-consuming parts of research, especially in high echnological areas as biosensors and chemical sensors. It is strongly necessary to take into account and reflect in the review the current stage of development, including existing sensing principles, methods of measurements, technologies and existing devices. Many PhD students and researchers working in the same area must make (and do it)the same type of work. A researcher must find appropriate references, to read it and make a critical analysis to determine what was done well before and what was not solved till now, and determine and formulate his future scientific aim and objectives. To help researchers save time and taxpayers money, we have started to publish 'Advances in Biosensors: Reviews' Book Series. The 1st volume contains 7 chapters written by 14 authors from 9 countries.
