Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Clinical Surgery, Vol. 1: A Periodical Devoted to Surgery in All Its Special Departments; October, 1876 The second case was one of rapidly growing vascular tumor, situated on the left arm at the middle of the internal border of the biceps muscle. The patient, a gentleman, twenty-five years of age, from Texas, had from birth been the subject of naevus, but it had remained stationary till a few months before he came under my care to be treat ed for epilepsy. At that time the tumor was an inch and three-quar ters in its long and about an inch in its short diameter, and nearly three-quarters of an inch high at its most elevated point. Pulsation was strong throughout, and this fact, together with its bright red color, showed it to be mainly arterial in character. I made altogether four injections into this tumor, at intervals of ten days, each injection consisting of two drachms of the fluid extract of ergot, introduced in two portions, at different points. From the first, amendment was apparent, and the tumor ceased to grow. After the second, the diminution in size began, and the pulsa tion became less strongly marked. Two weeks after the first injection, there were no signs of the tumor beyond a thickening of the skin at the place where it had been, and a slight brownish tint. At no time had there been any tenderness or other evidence of inflammation. The third case was very similar to the first. The growth was flat, mainly venous, and was situated on the forehead a little to the left of the mesial line. Three injections at intervals of ten days sufficed to effect a cure. In neither of these cases was there at any time the least evidence of inflammatory action from the injections, and consequently I feel war ranted in attributing the successful results entirely to the action of the ergot on the organic muscular fibers of the Vessels. Certainly the practice is in all respects to be commended as less painful and danger ous than any other procedure yet employed. Further experience can alone determine whether it is likely to be of permanent value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Clinical Surgery, Vol. 1: A Periodical Devoted to Surgery in All Its Special Departments; December 1876 I was then fully confirmed in my original impression that the deep obstruction was mainly if not entirely spasmodic. The blade of Maisonneuve which had been passed, could only cut up to and yet it had been easily followed by a solid steel sound number 31. The bare fact, however, that cutting had been done, more or less, would warrant the inference that the obstruction was organic and had been removed by the 2: blade of M. Maisonneuve. It was a matter ofgreat regret that a more prolonged trial with a large sound had not been made before resorting to the knife, but this was now unavailing, and the question of the true nature of the obstruction was necessarily left in doubt. Book Archives of Surgery 1890 Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Archives of Surgery 1890 Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Jonathan Hutchinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Surgery, 1890, Vol. 1 It may seem almost a work of presumption to begin the issue of a J ournal to which I purpose, with but very few exceptions, to be the sole contributor. The fact is, that I have a very large store of clinical material, much of which is carefully edited and ready for the press. My engagements are such as to preclude that continuous attention which is needful to prepare a book. I can only do fragmentary work, and I am much attracted to a form of publication which will permit of my recurring to the same subject should it seem desirable to make additions or corrections. I have been, from the earliest part of my professional career, an industrious note-taker, and from time to time I have given both myself and my friends much trouble in the endeavour to make my cases complete. The latter have in many instances very kindly spared no pains to obtain for me the final results in cases of which the first notes had been taken years before. In many of these the cases are of such a nature that I cannot mention the names of those who have assisted me, but I should feel to be ungrateful were I not to do my best to put the results of their labours to some practical use. It is not intended that the issue of the archives shall continue beyond a limited time. Coloured illustrations are already in preparation, which at the rate of four for each quarterly number will serve for three years. This period, should my life continue and health permit, may probably be about the duration of my Journal. It is proposed, as will be surmised from the headings of the plates, to publish the whole of them together as a Smaller Atlas at the con elusion of the archives. They will comprise very similar sub jects to those already given in my Atlas of Illustrations of Clinical Surgery, but will in very few cases be copied from it. The scope of the Anomvss will be wide, and is perhaps fairly indicated by the contents of No. I. The division of subjects under the special headings which are adopted in this number is not however intended to be permanent, but will be varied from time to time. I shall devote special attention to the endeavour to make my cases tell their own tale, and shall consider as my objects the elucidation of symptoms and the development of principles of treatment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Surgery, Vol. 1 For a number of years the trustees of the American Medical Association have purposed the establishment of an Archives of Surgery similar in character and scope to the Archives of Internal Medicine, the American Journal of Diseases of Children, the Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry, and other comparable publications. Delays of various kinds have arisen, among others those resulting from the war, which have prevented the fulfilment of this purpose. The fact, too, that there were already in this country two great journals of surgery, the Annals of Surgery, and Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, has made this delay of less consequence. The Journal of the American Medical Association has the largest circulation of any medical journal in the world, and represents the activities of the American medical profession. The Journal, therefore, must carry contributions which will cover all the different fields of medicine. Contributions to its surgical section are so numerous as to make it difficult to publish them all in The Journal, especially since many of these contributions are too technical to be of interest to the entire profession. The Trustees in establishing the Archives of Surgery have wisely determined that it shall not enter into competition with the journals of surgery now in existence. They believe that it should, besides lessening the burden of The Journal's publication, establish a sphere of its own. They believe, and again rightly, that another journal of clinical surgery is not warranted, and the task of the editor, Dr. Dean Lewis, and of the editorial board is to develop an organ which will in no way interfere with the justly earned successes of the existing publications, and yet establish a journal which will be creditable to the great organization that it represents, and sufficiently useful to the profession to warrant its entering the field. In the growing period of surgery, it was not possible to train surgeons in the true sense. Only a few men had the opportunity to work as assistants to experienced surgeons. This is no longer the case. In the future, the surgeon will serve an apprenticeship; and three-year courses of instruction in which such training can be given are now being offered for those graduates in medicine who have served their hospital internship.
