Snake got the tattoo before he even got the uniform. Hodges was haunted by the spirits of family heroes. Three young men, from vastly different worlds, were plunged into a white-hot, murderous melting pot of jungle warfare in the An Hoa Basin, Vietnam, 1969. They had no way of knowing what awaited them. For nothing could have prepared them for the madness of what they found. And in the heat and horror of battle they took on new identities, took on each other, and were reborn in fields of fire... Fields of Fire is a searing story of poetic power, razor-sharp observation, and non-stop combat, perfect for fans of Tim O’Brien, Karl Marlantes and Apocalypse Now. • Pages : 466 pages

Book excerpt: A "fresh...thrilling" (The Guardian) account of the Graeco-Persian Wars. In the fifth century B.C., a global superpower was determined to bring truth and order to what it regarded as two terrorist states. The superpower was Persia, incomparably rich in ambition, gold, and men. The terrorist states were Athens and Sparta, eccentric cities in a poor and mountainous backwater: Greece. The story of how their citizens took on the Great King of Persia, and thereby saved not only themselves but Western civilization as well, is as heart-stopping and fateful as any episode in history. Tom Holland’s brilliant study of these critical Persian Wars skillfully examines a conflict of critical importance to both ancient and modern history.

Book The Fire of Creation

Download or read book The Fire of Creation written by Jacobus Johannes Leeuw and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 1976 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of the Trinity is one of the most profound and illuminating teachings which, under different names and different forms, is found in many of the great world religions. The triune manifestation of the one Eternal is the fundamental reality of all existence and permeates every single manifestation of life and form both in the wolrd surrounding us and in the world of our inner life. The Third Person the Divine Trinity, the Holy Ghost in Christian terminology, is so crucial to our approach to life that the wonder is the relatively inconspicuous position it has held in Christian dogma. A priest in the Liberal Catholic Church, J. J. Van der Leeuw was in modern terminology, an ecumenical Christian, relating religious concepts from all times and places to the inner teachings of Jesus.

Book Whole World on Fire

  • Author : Lynn Eden
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9780801435782
  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book Whole World on Fire written by Lynn Eden and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whole World on Fire focuses on a technical riddle wrapped in an organizational mystery: How and why, for more than half a century, did the U.S. government fail to predict nuclear fire damage as it drew up plans to fight strategic nuclear war?U.S. bombing in World War II caused massive fire damage to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but later war plans took account only of damage from blast; they completely ignored damage from atomic firestorms. Recently a small group of researchers has shown that for modern nuclear weapons the destructiveness and lethality of nuclear mass fire often--and predictably--greatly exceeds that of nuclear blast. This has major implications for defense policy: the U.S. government has underestimated the damage caused by nuclear weapons, Lynn Eden finds, and built far more warheads, and far more destructive warheads, than it needed for the Pentagon's war-planning purposes. How could this have happened? The answer lies in how organizations frame the problems they try to solve. In a narrative grounded in organization theory, science and technology studies, and primary historical sources (including declassified documents and interviews), Eden explains how the U.S. Air Force's doctrine of precision bombing led to the development of very good predictions of nuclear blast--a significant achievement--but for many years to no development of organizational knowledge about nuclear fire. Expert communities outside the military reinforced this disparity in organizational capability to predict blast damage but not fire damage. Yet some innovation occurred, and predictions of fire damage were nearly incorporated into nuclear war planning in the early 1990s. The author explains how such a dramatic change almost happened, and why it did not. Whole World on Fire shows how well-funded and highly professional organizations, by focusing on what they do well and systematically excluding what they don't do well, may build a poor representation of the world--a self-reinforcing fallacy that can have serious consequences. In a sweeping conclusion, Eden shows the implications of the analysis for understanding such things as the sinking of the Titanic, the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, and the poor fireproofing in the World Trade Center.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Greek Fire written by Oliver Taplin and published by Jonathan Cape. This book was released on 1989 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores what has been made out of ancient Greece, and how the modern world has been inspired by, reacted against, imitated, transformed, parodied, recycled, subverted or received Greek culture. It is a brilliant attempt by one of our leading classical scholars to show why a new and fluid view of the Greek ideal - quite different from that of Renaissance painters or Victorian builders - is surfacing in our lives today and what the phenomenon might signify to us as we approach the twenty-first century. Visually spectacular and constantly surprising, this book is linked with a series of television documentaries made by Transatlantic Films with Channel 4.
