Book excerpt: ***Winner of the American Association for Italian Studies Book Prize 2022*** After World War II, a wave of Italian films emerged that depicted the life and hardships of characters left helpless after the conflict, bringing to the screen the struggles of a time of existential angst and uncertainty. This form of filmmaking was associated with a broader artistic phenomenon known as ‘neorealism’ and is now considered a pivotal point in the history of Italian cinema. But neorealism was not limited to film any more than it was to literature. It spread to other areas of artistic production, including architecture. What was, then, neorealist architecture? This book explores the links between architecture, filmmaking and the built environment in dopoguerra Italy (194X–195X) seeking to ascertain whether, and how, neorealism manifested itself in architecture. Terms such as ‘neorealist architecture’ or ‘architectural neorealism’ were hinted at in these years and recalled by historians of architecture in the following decades. Therefore, the concept was adopted ad hoc and popularized post hoc, in the absence of any declarations prior to 1955 that proclaimed what neorealism in architecture was or wanted to be. However, while the concept has been internalized by Italian architectural history, transfers between neorealism—as an aesthetic and ethic—and architecture—as one potential medium of its embodiment or expression—are still not fully understood. Therefore, its main goal is to provide an in-depth discussion of the concept ‘neorealist architecture’, the working assumption being that the connection between both terms is not meaningless. The book is beautifully illustrated with over 100 black and white archival images and is the first book to be published on neorealism in architecture. It will appeal to scholars, professionals, and students interested in history and theory of architecture, Italian studies, art history, and cultural studies.

Most analyses have treated the 1960s in Italy as the decade of “presentism” par excellence, a political decade but one liberated from history. Romy Golan, however, makes the counterargument that 1960s Italian artists did not forget Italian and European history but rather reimagined it in oblique form. Her book identifies and explores this imaginary through two forms of nonlinear and decidedly nonpresentist forms of temporality—the flashback and the eclipse. In view of the photographic and filmic nature of these two concepts, the book’s analysis is largely mediated by black-and-white images culled from art, design, and architecture magazines, photo books, film stills, and exhibition documentation. The book begins in Turin with Michelangelo Pistoletto’s Mirror Paintings; moves on to Campo urbano, a one-day event in the city of Como; and ends with the Vitalità del Negativo exhibition in Rome. CLAUDIO D'AMATO GUERRIERI is full Professor of Architectural Design and the current Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Polytechnic of Bari, which he founded and first headed in 1990. Between 2003 and 2009, he was the Director of the Program in Architecture and Industrial Design within the same Faculty. He was previously Chair of Architecture at the University of Reggio Calabria, and taught at the University of Rome. Since the 1980s, he has been part of many government commissions on the transformation of architectural teaching in universities. Professor d'Amato Guerrieri received his Laurea in Architettura in 1971 from La Sapienza University of Rome, where he subsequently obtained a Master degree in Study and Restoration of Monuments in 1974. Since 1978 he is part of the Architects' Professional Register for the jurisdiction of Rome. ATTILIO PETRUCCIOLI holds the Chair in Landscape Architecture at the Polytechnic of Bari, where he is also the Director of the Architecture Department. Between 2003 and 2009, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture. Before his appointment in Italy, Professor Petruccioli was the Aga Khan Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, and the Director of the Aga Khan Program of Islamic Architecture at Harvard and MIT. He is currently a member of the Italian Inter- University Research Centre on Developing Countries (CIRPS), and sits on the Board of Directors of the American Centre for Maghrib Studies, the Board of the International Seminar on Urban Form, the Committee of Honour of the International Network of Traditional Building Architecture and Urbanism (INTBAU) of the Prince of Wales Foundation in London, and the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE). He is also a research associate at the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University.
