Book Architectured Multifunctional Materials

Download or read book Architectured Multifunctional Materials written by Yves J. M. Brechet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In terms of design, multifunctional requirements are becoming the rule. While previous decades were driven by the development of new materials, this new engineering approach calls for the development of 'tailored materials'. Very often, contradictory requirements cannot be met by a single material. Fortunately, various innovative strategies are possible -associating different materials, playing with materials architectures (such as foams and truss lattices), or developing microstructural gradients. While these strategies open a whole new range of materials and properties, where structural requirements and functional properties can be combined, they also reveal additional challenges. New processes must be implemented. Appropriate constitutive equations must be developed. Interfaces must be engineered. And bioinspired hierarchical structures must be developed and modeled, to name just a few. This book brings together researchers to review recent advances and address the list of challenges. Topics include: basic concepts in architecture materials; cellular and fibrous materials; processing challenges; towards structures and multifunctional materials.

Book Architectured Materials in Nature and Engineering

Download or read book Architectured Materials in Nature and Engineering written by Yuri Estrin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with a group of architectured materials. These are hybrid materials in which the constituents (even strongly dissimilar ones) are combined in a given topology and geometry to provide otherwise conflicting properties. The hybridization presented in the book occurs at various levels - from the molecular to the macroscopic (say, sub-centimeter) ones. This monograph represents a collection of programmatic chapters, defining archimats and summarizing the results obtained by using the geometry-inspired materials design. The area of architectured or geometry-inspired materials has reached a certain level of maturity and visibility for a comprehensive presentation in book form. It is written by a group of authors who are active researchers working on various aspects of architectured materials. Through its 14 chapters, the book provides definitions and descriptions of the archetypes of architectured materials and addresses the various techniques in which they can be designed, optimized, and manufactured. It covers a broad realm of archimats, from the ones occurring in nature to those that have been engineered, and discusses a range of their possible applications. The book provides inspiring and scientifically profound, yet entertaining, reading for the materials science community and beyond.

Book Materials and Strategies for Lab on a Chip Biological Analysis Cell Material Interfaces and Fluidic Assembly of Nanostructures Volume 1191

Download or read book Materials and Strategies for Lab on a Chip Biological Analysis Cell Material Interfaces and Fluidic Assembly of Nanostructures Volume 1191 written by Sashi K. Murthy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of miniaturized systems for chemical and biochemical analysis has grown to the point where lab-on-a-chip devices are now important enabling tools in a diverse array of application areas. As the size of these systems continues to shrink, details of the micro- and nanoscale phenomena associated with their construction and operation must be considered. This book focuses on materials and engineering aspects of lab-on-a-chip devices and the application of microfluidics to materials synthesis. A microfabricated fluidic system integrating biological sample treatment and detection on a single chip offers the promise of low-cost, rapid and high-performance analysis. These devices can perform high-throughput biochemical assays for drug discovery and provide portability for point-of-care diagnostics and biothreat monitoring. Topics include: frontiers in lab-on-a-chip research; materials for lab-on-a-chip; materials synthesis on chip; cell manipulation and biomimetics on chip; porous materials in lab-on-a-chip; sensing and detection on chip - molecular level; sensing and detecting on chip - cells and particles; and sensing and detection on chip - DNA.
