Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of St. Louis has undergone substantial physical changes in recent years--dramatic new structures have been built in the rejuvenated downtown district and throughout the urban area; neglected buildings have been put to new, innovative uses; and historic neighborhoods and landmarks have been restored. Illustrating and describing over two hundred years of architecture from both the city and the surrounding region, A Guide to the Architecture of St. Louis includes over 500 photographs, elevation drawings, plans, diagrams, and maps. In addition, the entry for each structure gives the address, the name of the architect, the date, the date of construction, and descriptive and historic information. Introductory essays provide an overview of architectural developments in the city and stress its unique characteristics, such as its private streets and vernacular structures. Sponsored by the St. Louis Chapter, American Institute of Architects

Book Westmoreland and Portland Places

Download or read book Westmoreland and Portland Places written by Julius Hunter and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining these and many other accomplishments of these families, Julius Hunter provides a unique historical perspective on the past century of American life. In addition to providing the historical background, Hunter presents vivid descriptions of glamorous social occasions in Westmoreland and Portland - weddings, balls, even funerals - and he shows that the residents were sometimes united, and sometimes split, by bonds of family, marriage, religion, club membership, and political preference. Interviews with people who lived on those streets early in this century provide a unique glimpse of what it was like to grow up in the prestigious neighborhood. Hunter's text is superbly illustrated. More than 200 color photographs depict the houses as they appear today, including architectural details and interior views. More than 200 black-and-white photographs provide a glimpse of St. Louis's past. Every house that has stood in either Westmoreland or Portland is shown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paradise Planned is the definitive history of the development of the garden suburb, a phenomenon that originated in England in the late eighteenth century, was quickly adopted in the United State and northern Europe, and gradually proliferated throughout the world. These bucolic settings offered an ideal lifestyle typically outside the city but accessible by streetcar, train, and automobile. Today, the principles of the garden city movement are once again in play, as retrofitting the suburbs has become a central issue in planning. Strategies are emerging that reflect the goals of garden suburbs in creating metropolitan communities that embrace both the intensity of the city and the tranquility of nature. Paradise Planned is the comprehensive, encyclopedic record of this movement, a vital contribution to architectural and planning history and an essential recourse for guiding the repair of the American townscape.

Book St Louis

  • Author : Eric Sandweiss
  • Publisher : Temple University Press

Download or read book St Louis written by Eric Sandweiss and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Louis' story stands for the story of all those cities whose ambitions and civic self-image, forged from the growth of the mercantile and industrial eras, have been dramatically altered over time. More dramatically, perhaps, than most but in a manner shared by all St. Louis' changing economic base, shifting population, and altered landscape have forced scholars, policymakers, and residents alike to acknowledge the transiency of what once seemed inexorable metropolitan trends: concentration, growth, accumulated wealth, and generally improved well-being. In this book, Eric Sandweiss scrutinizes the everyday landscape streets, houses, neighborhoods, and public buildings as it evolved in a classic American city.Bringing to life the spaces that most of us pass without noticing, he reveals how the processes of dividing, trading, improving, and dwelling upon land are acts that reflect and shape social relations. From its origins as a French colonial settlement in the eighteenth century to the present day, "St Louis" offers a story not just about how our past is diagramed in brick and asphalt, but also about the American city's continuing viability as a place where the balance of individual rights and collective responsibilities can be debated, demonstrated, and adjusted for generations to come. -- Amazon.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1902, magazine publisher Edward Gardner Lewis needed greater space for his thriving business, then based in downtown St. Louis. He headed west, out Delmar Boulevard a mile past the city line, and bought five acres of open land adjacent to the loop in the trolley tracks that sent the 10D streetcar back downtown. By 1903, Lewis was building a complex that included the Woman's Magazine Building, a five-story octagonal tower with an eight-ton searchlight in its dome. In 1906, University City was incorporated, and Lewis became its first mayor, serving three terms. In 1913, Lewis went west again, this time to found the utopian colony of Atascadero, California. His octagonal dazzler is now University City's City Hall. In 2007, in its first such list, the American Planning Association named the Delmar Loop one of the country's "Great Streets"--it's a long story.

  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Likeness and Landscape written by Dolores Ann Kilgo and published by Missouri History Museum. This book was released on 1994 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by his contemporaries as Daguerre's most dedicated follower, Thomas M. Easterly did most of his work in the relative obscurity of St. Louis. This lavishly illustrated account of his twenty-seven-year career established him as a new master in the ranks of nineteenth-century photographers. It will be an essential addition to the libraries of scholars and collectors. Easterly's subjects range far beyond the traditional daguerrean portrait. Of his surviving inventory of over 600 plates in the collection of the Missouri Historical Society, over 140 are views of St. Louis, his native New England, and the Niagara Falls region of New York. Three series of American Indian portraits constitute the earliest dated photographic record of Plains tribal members. A series of studio portraits of ordinary people and celebrities demonstrate a remarkable mastery of technique placing Easterly decades ahead of his time.
