Download or read book Protecting People and Buildings from Terrorism written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-01-31 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerned with the vulnerability of U.S. civilian and military personnel to terrorist bombing attacks, the U.S. Congress directed the Department of Defense to undertake a comprehensive research and testing program aimed at protecting people in buildings from such attacks. The Blast Mitigation for Structures Program (BMSP) was initiated in 1997 and has produced a large volume of experimental and analytical data that will permit the design of new, more robust buildings as well as the development of methods to retrofit a large number of vulnerable existing structures. This report reviews the BMSP program and investigates a process that would use existing institutional infrastructures (i.e., building code and standards-writing organizations, professional and technical organizations, universities, and research centers) to disseminate knowledge.

Book excerpt: Showing how the upswell of paranoia and growing demand for security in the post-9/11 world has paradoxically created widespread insecurity, these varied essays examine how this anxiety-laden mindset erodes spaces both architectural and personal, encroaching on all aspects of everyday life. Starting from the most literal level—barricades and barriers in front of buildings, beefed up border patrols, gated communities, "safe rooms,"—to more abstract levels—enhanced surveillance at public spaces such as airports, increasing worries about contagion, the psychological predilection for fortified space—the contributors cover the full gamut of securitized public life that is defining the zeitgeist of twenty-first century America

Book Architecture and Violence

Download or read book Architecture and Violence written by Bechir Kenzari and published by Actar D, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a compelling compilation of essays by international architectural theorists on the relationship of violence to space. With the events of September 11th, the London bombings, the Madrid train explosions, and the daily blasts in Baghdad, the question of violence and terrorism is imposing architectural ramifications with renewed urgency. A new sense of architectural awareness has been forged as violence is forcing its place as an architectural datum.Wide-ranging contributions approach design issues related to violence through multiple angles and intersections. We only need to flip casually through the repertoire of the built environment to realize that certain built structures (from concentration camps to separation walls, from jails to propaganda exhibitions, from slaughterhouses to suburban complexes, from illegal settlements to palaces) either sanction violence or give it a spatial ground to happen and thrive.

Book Architecture and Violence

Download or read book Architecture and Violence written by Bechir Kenzari and published by ACTAR Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In today's turbulent times few subjects deserve a closer scrutiny than the interactions between violence and constructed environment. Modernity's contradictory histories laid bare the fact that it is impossible to consider architecture simply a benign, passive victim of humanity's violent vices. Built space is as capable of incarnating violent acts as enacting them, disciplining and silencing the subject in the process. In this compelling volume, some of the most incisive thinkers of contemporary architectural theory make manifest the intricacies of interrelations between architecture and violent events. Employing a wide variety of perspectives and methodical approaches, the authors examine some of the most dramatic and unexpected instances of these vexing relations"--Back cover.
