Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architectural Illustrations, History and Description of Carlisle Cathedral Nearly all the works hitherto produced on the English Cathedrals, bear more of a picturesque than of an Architectural character, and are there fore nearly useless for the practical uses of the architect. For this purpose, says the reviewer of Carter's Ancient Architecture'; in the Quarterly Review, simple but accurate outlines, on an intelligible scale, are alone required; highly finished Plates on a small scale, though they may be liked by the amateur, are worse than useless to the art, as they encourage the builder who attempts Gothic architecture, to content himself with a general resemblance, and to blur all the minor features. A work, professing to treat on architec ture, and wanting in plans and sections, is no better than a treatise on anatomy, which omits the representations of the bones. Book excerpt: Bell's Cathedrals: The Cathedral Church Of Carlisle: A Description Of Its Fabric And A Brief History Of The Episcopal See This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book Architectural Illustrations and Description

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architectural Illustrations and Description: Of the Cathedral Church at Durham This Volume was commenced with the intention of making the architectural illustrations to one scale. This intention has been carried out, and the Work as now completed, forms, together with a similar Work by the Author upon the Cathedral Church at Carlisle, the first series of parallel representations of two English Cathedrals ever given to the public. It would seem perfectly surprising that, in the numerous works already produced, this plan has not been adopted, did not the length of time necessarily expended in making correct representations, and lack of patronage, at once explain the cause. For the materials of the Historical Account the Author is indebted to Sanderson's reprint of "Davis's Rites and Monuments of the Church of Durham" (1767); the reprint (1816) of Hegge's "Legend of St. Cuthbert"; Hutchinson's "History of Durham" (1785); and Raine's "St. Cuthbert" (1828). As these contain the lives of the Bishops of Lindisfarne and Durham, as well as biographies of the Priors and Deans, with the Statutes of the Cathedral, and many other particulars, it has been thought unnecessary to enter into any long account, and the principal portion of the following pages therefore relates to the Cathedral in its present state. The Author begs to tender his acknowledgments to the Dean and Chapter of Durham, for the numerous facilities afforded him in the prosecution of the Work, now terminated.
