Book Architectural Flourishes Paris France

Download or read book Architectural Flourishes Paris France written by Marques Vickers and published by Marquis Publishing. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Architectural Flourishes: Paris France” is a pictorial guide illustrating the features, ornamentation and detailing that capture Paris’ mid to late 19th century architectural legacy. The majority of images may be traced to the ambitious reign of Napoleon III’s Second Republic and his appointed Prefect of the Seine Department, George-Eugene Haussmann. Commonly known as Baron Haussmann, he was directed in 1853 to orchestrate the modernization and transformation of Paris. He created that transformation by installing wider boulevards, parks, public works and creating a fertile environment for redevelopment. His office targeted the eradication of unsightly slums along with cramped and constricted commercial districts. His program obliterated significant traces of Paris’ medieval history. Approximately 350.000 people would be displaced over the sixteen-year duration of his crusade. Nine months before Napoleon III’s government collapsed, he was unceremoniously dismissed from office. The photographic imagery of this edition focuses on the architectural styling and exterior moldings prevalent during that era. The text details the accompanying history of the Haussmann era architecture and its two design successors. Haussmann styling would be supplanted initially by the Art Nouveau movement. Promoted during the Belle Époque period, the style was introduced during 1890 spreading afterwards throughout Europe. It receded in popularity upon the beginning of World War I. Art Deco architecture coincided with the fading of Art Nouveau’s influence beginning in 1910. Its was elevated into prominence at the International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts exhibition held in Paris during 1925. It remained a dominant style until 1939 and the global aggression inflicted by World War II. Paris features few reminders of the ancient settlement of Lutetia formed by a Celtic tribe known as the Parisii in the 3rd century BC. The Romans captured the community in 52 BC and converted it into a Gallo-Roman garrison. The community was rebuilt in the 1st century AD employing a traditional Roman style layout. The core of the settlement was the Ile de la Cite, the current location of Notre Dame Cathedral and the Palais de Justice. The city showcases scattered remnants from the Medieval and Renaissance eras. Most are ecclesiastical in context. They appear dwarfed by contemporary and statuesque Haussmann inspired constructions and facades. Haussmann’s designs elevated Paris into one of the most beautiful international cities. The architectural detailing photographed is a reminder that classic elemental design never ultimately goes out of fashion.

Book Architectural Diplomacy

Download or read book Architectural Diplomacy written by Gil R. Smith and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1993 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1676-77 a single event revitalized the traditions of Roman design. That event, the union of the French Royal Academy and the Academy of Saint Luke in Rome, is given new significance in the present study. It has long been thought that the academies' fusion signaled the passing of artistic preeminence from Rome to France. Here, however, the author proposes a more complex interpretation. By demonstrating that Rome continued, in fact, to be the more innovative and influential of the two academies, Gil Smith is able to discern patterns of influence that cross geographical and temporal boundaries, and to portray late-Baroque architecture in international terms. For this Compelling portrait of a transitional period of European architectural trends, Professor Smith draws on the student competitions inaugurated at the Saint Luke Academy to commemorate its ties with the French academies. Far more important than mere "academic" work, these competition drawings reveal the nature of instruction in Rome, the influences of the academy's officers and patrons, and the nature of contemporary projects similar in program to the competitions. The design synthesis pursued in Rome until the end of the seventeenth century, particularly by Carlo Fontana, would become an important source of inspiration for prominent architects of the next century. Among others, the academy's design methodology influenced Fischer von Erlach, Filippo Juvarra, and Giles Oppenord in their search for a progressive Baroque language.

Book excerpt: What style building do you live in? Is it a skyscraper, a Victorian home, or a modern building? In Architecture: Cool Women Who Design Structures, readers ages 9 to 12 examine the stories of women who are today designing the houses, schools, museums, and public spaces where we spend our time. Architecture is the planning, designing, and construction of buildings and other structures. It’s architects who figure out what style of building fits best in a certain space, what the structure should look like, how it needs to be built to withstand the environment, and what materials best suit the needs of the people who are using the structure. Art, engineering, science, technology—architecture involves all these disciplines, and more! Architecture: Cool Women Who Design Structures examines the history of architecture and the journey of three women who are working as architects today. Patricia Galván works in commercial and interior architecture and is the chairwoman for the American Institute of Architects’ Women in Architecture committee. Farida Abu-Bakare was born in Qatar and raised in Canada. Today, she is an architect who designs science labs for universities and other institutions. Maia Small works as an architect and urban designer at the City of San Francisco Planning Department. She has also taught architecture at Harvard University, Rhode Island School of Design, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Sidebars on important female architects throughout history, quotes, and essential questions for readers are included throughout the text in order to encourage critical thinking and self-drawn conclusions. The book also includes a timeline, glossary, and further resources for readers to further investigate the topic.
