Whereas once the value of a piece of research was solely measured by the number of citations it received by fellow academics, shifting funding models and new societal concerns are forcing academia to question its structure and this mode of evaluation. At the same time a wave of practitioners and new types of institutions, such as RMIT in Melbourne and the London School of Architecture (LSA), have been recasting architectural education and theoretical speculation within practice, turning the traditional architectural studio into a learning environment that adopts and adapts academic models, and starts to use architectural research as a potential source of business intelligence, as a means for self-generating future commissions and speculative opportunities that sometimes even shift the terrain of practice. This new focus on research in practice is indicative of a profession redefining its relevance and scope. This is destabilising the traditional roles of academia and practice by questioning their deep-rooted separation and demanding a new definition of the term ‘research’ with one that is relevant to both parties. This issue features contributions from architectural thinkers, researchers and a number of practitioners who are recasting academic speculation within their own studios. This not only redefines what is meant by research and what forms it takes, but also how it creates value for them, their clients, for the discipline as a whole and for the ultimate users of their designs. This helps us to understand how research might be deemed valuable beyond a purely academic context. In order to assess the need for reform in architecture education, students and alumni from 15 representative campuses were surveyed as to whether they would attend their School of Architecture again. Survey questions also dealt with preparation of graduates for their profession, salary expectations, reasons for entering the architecture profession, feelings about the profession, and the School of Architecture's reputation on the university campus. A model of architecture education based on seven separate but interlocking priorities was proposed: (1) an enriched mission; (2) a more inclusive institutional context based on the principle of diversity with dignity; (3) a goal of standards without standardization; (4) an architecture curriculum that is better integrated with knowledge both within and outside the architecture discipline; (5) establishment of a supportive climate for learning; (6) a more unified profession based on partnership between schools and the profession; and (7) preparation of architects for lives of civic engagement. They argue that architectural education lacked a sense of purpose in connecting the profession to the current problems of society. 'Building Community' summarizes the goals of a design education as: helping students to develop the skills and competency to work within the realities of the profession; preparing graduates to be able to adapt to the changing needs of the society; and assisting students in developing their own analytical framework to envision and build a better environment and community. Boyer and Mitgang contend that urban-based design studios through research should be addressing the real issues of our society: the destruction of community, crime, homelessness, and urban decay. They also argue that architecture schools should take a leadership role in preserving the planet's resources and environment by teaching sustainable architectural design and using 'real life' studio problems. This study examines the role of architectural studio in the post-Katrina reconstruction of the Lower 9th Ward community. Survey data found that a majority of the students developed an understanding of the urban design and sustainability, and were of the view that architectural studio should act as an advocate for underrepresented communities, and agreed that there was value in the 'interaction between studio and community'
