The murder of George Floyd in 2020, the renewed international take up of the cry Black Lives Matter and the subsequent toppling of a statue commemorating slave-merchant-turned-philanthropist Edward Colston in Bristol provoked urgent questions on memorialisation, white privilege, social justice and repair. Debates on how legacies of colonialism and empire in Britain should be addressed spilled out of the scholarly world into the public discourse. In the immediate wake of the statue toppling this book offers a unique, distinctive and timely contribution to those debates: a series of voices and experiences are offered as critical commentaries and accounts of recent interventions on an official heritage narrative. It sets out to break the ‘dead silence’, by bringing together diverse perspectives from academics, artists, activists, heritage professionals and tourist guides. The book offers fresh insights, referencing work attending to the impacts and legacies of colonisation primarily in Bath and Bristol, augmented with comparative contributions from Lancaster and Mexico offering significant and pertinent resonances. Whether found in architectural records, social documentary, photojournalism, or artistic practice, photographic objects are embedded in urban contestation, aesthetically charged by artists, reinserted into social histories, and mobilized to imagine a future city. Photogenic Montreal takes a question initially posed by heritage debates – what does photography preserve? – and creates a rich conversation about the agency of the human actors before and behind the camera, and of the medium itself. The interplay of archives and activisms structures the book. Photographs that appear to be sealed off in newspapers, storage rooms, or archives accrue new meaning when they cross the threshold back into social spaces and circulate anew. It is through the reactivation of archival photographs that submerged traces of urban experience are discovered, and alternate histories of Montreal can be recounted. Multiple forms of activism and artistic expression complement this archival work. Beginning in the 1960s, community-minded and heritage groups responded to the tensions arising from urban reconstruction, gentrification, and the erasure of neighbourhoods; this activism also left its photographic traces. Attentive to the still-changing face of the city’s architecture, neighbourhoods, and street life, Photogenic Montreal participates in debates about who the city belongs to, who speaks on its behalf, and how to picture its past and present.

Book excerpt: Women in architecture have always existed, perhaps not as professionals but always as influencers at many levels. Then during wars in the absence of men, women took on the traditionally masculine roles of design and construction easily. The river Thames is graced by a bridge built entirely by a female workforce. But the acceptance and the presence of female architects alongside male architects took a long time to be realised. Finland was the first country to introduce the formal education of women in architecture around 1860s. However, Ethel Charles (1898), the first British women to gain the membership of the Royal Institute of Architects, went on to design 'cottages' even though she was the first woman to win an International prize for architecture and the RIBA Silver medal winner. Many women worked in various capacities as influencers up to 1970s and 80s- teaching (Teolinda Bolivar, Venezuela), in government responsibilities (Olajumoke Adenowo, Nigeria), interior or furniture designers (Eileen Gray) and as activist (Arundhati Roy, India). Some of the female architects also worked with their husbands (Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry) and other male associates. Somehow it has always been easier to study than to practice architecture for women. The jump from being influencers to front-liners was not an easy transition, even in the 'West'. But changing socio-political times, the globalization of practice and a bold willingness to disengage from past constrictions did indeed change the nature of women in architecture. Things have improved materially for women employees because of social and legal changes (Equal pay, maternity leave, basic pay, etc.) but particular issues of being a woman in architecture remain. The numbers of female-led architecture firms also remain very small compared to other professions such as law, accountancy and medicine. There has also been a question raised about whether there is a feminine style of architecture. These volumes explore four themes - History, Work, Influence and Practice. The set offers a holistic and non Euro-centric view of women in architecture, with good practice and inspiration from all parts of the world.

Book excerpt: The dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, who ruled the Dominican Republic from 1930 until his assassination in 1961, was one of the longest and bloodiest in Latin American history. The Dictator’s Seduction is a cultural history of the Trujillo regime as it was experienced in the capital city of Santo Domingo. Focusing on everyday forms of state domination, Lauren Derby describes how the regime infiltrated civil society by fashioning a “vernacular politics” based on popular idioms of masculinity and fantasies of race and class mobility. Derby argues that the most pernicious aspect of the dictatorship was how it appropriated quotidian practices such as gossip and gift exchange, leaving almost no place for Dominicans to hide or resist. Drawing on previously untapped documents in the Trujillo National Archives and interviews with Dominicans who recall life under the dictator, Derby emphasizes the role that public ritual played in Trujillo’s exercise of power. His regime included the people in affairs of state on a massive scale as never before. Derby pays particular attention to how events and projects were received by the public as she analyzes parades and rallies, the rebuilding of Santo Domingo following a major hurricane, and the staging of a year-long celebration marking the twenty-fifth year of Trujillo’s regime. She looks at representations of Trujillo, exploring how claims that he embodied the popular barrio antihero the tíguere (tiger) stoked a fantasy of upward mobility and how a rumor that he had a personal guardian angel suggested he was uniquely protected from his enemies. The Dictator’s Seduction sheds new light on the cultural contrivances of autocratic power.
