Book excerpt: Archist is a playful interpretation of the expressive language and aesthetics of some of the world's most popular artists. For example, Babina tried to imagine what a house designed by Dalí or a museum conceived by Miró would look like. The illustrations represent an imaginary and imagined world of shapes. Federico Babina finds great pleasure in imagining architecture designed and constructed through the interpretation of an artist's language. The book shows that there is a symbiotic relationship and implicit partnership between architecture and art. The posters in the book manage to catch the essence of the oeuvre of the artists in question. As a consequence, the posters are much more than mere decoration; they become a playful piece of art history.

Book Binding Space The Book as Spatial Practice

Download or read book Binding Space The Book as Spatial Practice written by Marian Macken and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books orient, intrigue, provoke and direct the reader while editing, interpreting, encapsulating, constructing and revealing architectural representation. Binding Space: The Book as Spatial Practice explores the role of the book form within the realm of architectural representation. It proposes the book itself as another three-dimensional, complementary architectural representation with a generational and propositional role within the design process. Artists’ books in particular – that is, a book made as an original work of art, with an artist, designer or architect as author – have certain qualities and characteristics, quite different from the conventional presentation and documentation of architecture. Paginal sequentiality, the structure and objecthood of the book, and the act of reading create possibilities for the book as a site for architectural imagining and discourse. In this way, the form of the book affects how the architectural work is conceived, constructed and read. In five main sections, Binding Space examines the relationships between the drawing, the building and the book. It proposes thinking through the book as a form of spatial practice, one in which the book is cast as object, outcome, process and tool. Through the book, we read spatial practice anew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive book on the extensive, yet rarely seen, graphic works of pioneering filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein Sergei Eisenstein is regarded as one of cinema’s greatest revolutionaries. Less well known is that he was also a prolific graphic artist who drew compulsively as a means of expressing his ideas. Arranged chronologically, Eisenstein on Paper is divided into six chapters, each prefaced by short texts relating to the graphic works of each distinct period, and interwoven with excerpts from Eisenstein’s own essays and diary entries. In 1930 Eisenstein traveled to the United States and then Mexico, where he produced hundreds of drawings influenced by ancient and contemporary Mexican art. Forced to return to Russia in 1932, Eisenstein came under the scrutiny of the Communist government and, struggling to make further films without political interference, turned again to sketching for artistic freedom. By the end of his life, he had pared his style down to the utmost simplicity and sincerity. Despite completing relatively few films in his lifetime, Eisenstein made several thousand drawings. Eisenstein on Paper is the product of a groundbreaking collaboration with RGALI, the Russian State Archive of Arts and Literature, and is a fitting tribute to an incredible graphic talent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, businesses invest millions, if not billions of dollars to generate sales, launch new products, improve customer service, increase employee effectiveness, and reduce inefficiencies, all in an effort to ultimately deliver maximum return to their shareholders. Process improvement initiatives, computer systems sporting acronym-laden names, and continual reorganization efforts often lead the pack. At times, desired results are achieved and the investment is validated. However, all too often initiatives die on the vine due to leadership changes and lack of continued funding, or the muffled conversation that the effort should have never started in the first place eventually wins the day. This story discuses how one group of leaders in one company worked to get it right. The story is a work of fiction, and the characters exist only in the author's mind. However, the five Ps outlined in this book are grounded in reality and represent how leaders and their teams can work together to accomplish remarkable results.
