This book was released on 1979 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the final report concerning a five year long archeological project which was undertaken to recover information about cultural resources within the present area of Cochiti Reservoir in the northern Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico. Three previous volumes have summarized data recovered from intensive surveys and two seasons of excavation within the reservoir boundaries. These reports have served as basic documentation required by Federal law to mitigate the destruction of archeological remains caused by flooding. This volume serves as an interpretive and analytical synthesis of those data. In 21 chapters, the contributors to this report provide detailed analyses of settlement, subsistence and adaptive changes which characterize the human occupation of the northern Rio Grande Valley over the last four millenia. Papers are grouped according to broad cultural and temporal periods of adaptation-Archiac, prehistoric Pueblo and Historic Spanish-and emphasize analysis of residential size, subsistence pursuits and economic articulation of the occupants within the region during each period of adaptation. Particular emphasis is placed upon developing and evaluating a number of models proposed to account for settlement dynamics and adaptive change through time.

Book Archeological Investigations in Cochiti Reservoir New Mexico Volume 1 A Survey of Regional Variability

Download or read book Archeological Investigations in Cochiti Reservoir New Mexico Volume 1 A Survey of Regional Variability written by J. V. Biella and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A total of 325 archeological sites were documented during surveys of Cochiti Reservoir. Detailed summaries of environmental, architectural, and artifactual variability are presented for each site location. Major occupational periods are Late Archaic, 800 b.c. to A.D. 400, Anasazi, A.D. 600 to 1600, and Historic, ca. A.D. 1540 to present. Most sites are non-structural artifact scatters, frequently associated with hearths, or small one to three room structural sites. One pueblo of 200-400 rooms was recorded. Additional classes of sites include shelters, depressions terraces, corrals, pens, and petroglyphs. Regional and temporal variabilities can be isolated among the kinds of seasonal, short-term subsistence-related activities represented at sites within a restricted ecological context.

Book Archaeological Investigations in New Mexico Colorado and Utah Vol 68

Download or read book Archaeological Investigations in New Mexico Colorado and Utah Vol 68 written by Jesse Walter Fewkes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archaeological Investigations in New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah, Vol. 68: With 14 Plates During the year 1916 the author spent five months in archeological investigations in New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah, three of these months being given to intensive work on the Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. An account of the result of the Mesa Verde work will appear in the Smithsonian Annual Report for 1916, under the title A Prehistoric Mesa Verde Pueblo and Its People. What was accomplished in June and October, 1916, before and after the' work at the Mesa Verde, is here recorded. As archeological work in the Southwest progresses, it becomes more and more evident that we can not solve the many problems it presents until we know more about the general distribution of ruins, and the characteristic forms peculiar to different geographical locali ties. Most of the results thus far accomplished are admirable, though limited to a few regions, while many extensive areas have as yet not been explored by the archeologist and the types of architecture peculiar to these unexplored areas remain unknown. Here we'need a reconnoissance followed by intensive work to supplement what has already been done. The following pages contain an account of what might be called archeological scouting in New Mexico and Utah. While the matter here presented may not shed much light on general archeology, it is, nevertheless, a contribution to our knowl edge of the prehistoric human inhabitants of our country. Primarily it treats of aboriginal architecture. The author Spent two months in searching for undescribed build ings concerning some of which comparatively nothing was known. During June, 1916, headquarters were made at Gallup, New Mexico the Utah ruins, new to science, were visited from the Indian agency at Ouray, Utah.
