Book Archeological Investigations at Paragonah Utah

Download or read book Archeological Investigations at Paragonah Utah written by Neil M. Judd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archeological Investigations at Paragonah, Utah: With Fifteen Plates Paragonah was reached early in July and the party at once centered its attention upon an elevation known locally as the big mound, a huge knoll measuring approximately 225 feet in diameter and 10 feet high. There were several reasons for this selection° (i) It was the largest of those remaining and, notwithstanding the previous removal of the southern one-third and superficial evidence of other excavations, it still promised more perfect examples of architecture and deeper court deposits than adjacent mounds; (2) being in the way of proposed improvements, it was in imminent danger of complete reduction, with final loss of its archeologic con tents and (3) exposure of the house-group which the big mound was thought to cover would form a fitting sequel to earlier studies of smaller elevations containing from one to five dwellings, together with their related structures. Book Archeological Investigations in British Guiana Classic Reprint

Download or read book Archeological Investigations in British Guiana Classic Reprint written by Clifford Evans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archeological Investigations in British Guiana The presentation Of any archeological report covering a large area brings to the authors the duty and the pleasure of calling atten tion to the many other individuals whose advice and assistance made it possible. In this case, the ready cooperation and friendly aid that we encountered everywhere in British Guiana makes acknowledgment Of our indebtedness an unusually pleasant task. Our research was made possible by financial support from a United States Educational Exchange Research Grant under the Fulbright Act and by a grant from the Smithsonian Institution. By the terms of the Fulbright Act we were required to work under the auspices of a recognized local educational institution, and the University Col lege of the West Indies agreed to undertake sponsorship. Their representative in British Guiana, Mr. A. A. Thompson, made a hotel reservation for us in Georgetown and Offered his services if they should be needed to facilitate our work. A more logical institutional sponsor was the British Guiana Museum, and largely because of the personal interest of the director, Mr. Vincent Roth, it was with the Museum that we worked most closely. From the day of our arrival until the day of our departure, we were guided and assisted by Mr. Roth. He put us in touch with the local Officials, and his personal introductions made them predisposed to help us as much as possible. His intimate knowledge of much Of the Colony, acquired during years as a surveyor for the Government, helped us to plan an itinerary that gave us a maximum archeological return for the time available. In addition, he allowed us to store our Specimens and equipment at the Museum, which was not only a convenience but an insurance of their safety. Beyond this aid fur nished in his capacity as director of the Museum, we are indebted to Mr. Roth for his personal hospitality, including a memorable, belated Christmas dinner in February at his home. For all of these and many smaller kindnesses, we wish to express our deepest gratitude. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections Vol 68 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections Vol 68 Classic Reprint written by Smithsonian Institution and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections, Vol. 68 During the year 1916 the author spent five months in archeological investigations in New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah, three of these months being given to intensive work on the Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. An account of the result of the Mesa Verde work will appear in the Smithsonian Annual Report for 1916, under the title A Prehistoric Mesa Verde Pueblo and Its People. What was accomplished in June and October, 1916, before and after the work at the Mesa Verde, is here recorded. As archeological work in the Southwest progresses, it becomes more and more evident that we can not solve the many problems it presents until we know more about the general distribution of ruins, and the characteristic forms peculiar to different geographical locali ties. Most of the results thus far accomplished are admirable, though limited to a few regions, while many extensive areas have as yet not been explored by the archeologist and the types of architecture peculiar to these unexplored areas remain unknown. Here we need a reconnoissance followed by intensive work to supplement what has already been done. The following pages contain an account of what might be called archeological scouting in New Mexico and Utah. While the matter here presented may not shed much light on general archeology, it is, nevertheless, a contribution to our knowl edge of the prehistoric human inhabitants of our country. Primarily it treats of aboriginal architecture. The author spent two months in searching for undescribed build ings concerning some of which comparatively nothing was known. During June, 1916, headquarters were made at Gallup, New Mexico the Utah ruins, new to science, were visited from the Indian agency at Ouray, Utah. Book Archeological Investigations of the Ironmaster s House Hopewell Village National Historic Site Pennsylvania Classic Reprint

Download or read book Archeological Investigations of the Ironmaster s House Hopewell Village National Historic Site Pennsylvania Classic Reprint written by Audrey R. Marie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archeological Investigations of the Ironmaster's House, Hopewell Village National Historic Site, Pennsylvania A few small sherds of pearlware and glass were recovered along the base of the east and center walls of the cellar but these were found in areas of rodent disturbance. It was not possible to date the installation of the mortar floor by association. With the nondiagnostic window glass fragments found on its surface, and mortar analyses of a floor sample were inconclusive. The interpretation of the mortar surface as an historic floor derives from the fact that it is not a modern composition cement, and the observation that it is the earliest cultural level in the cellar, resting on sterile sandstone bedrock. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archeological Investigations in the Yadkin River Valley, 1984-1987 Any successes of the Great Bend research are due to the interest, support, cooperation and hard work of dozens of people, only some of whom can be mentioned here. Prominent among supporters are the Surry County Historical Society and the Surry County Committee for America's 400th Anniversary, which provided us with funding, logistical aid and their morale-boosting interest in our work. In particular I thank Marion Venable for her continuing assistance during the two seasons of Surry County field work and her liaison work with the historical society. Additional funding was made available by the National Park Service through a 1987 Survey and Planning Grant, administered through North Carolina's Division of Archives and History. Wake Forest University provided a research leave for me, and the University's Graduate Council granted funds to assist in preparation of this manuscript. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of North American Archaeology The little volume herewith presented to the public is a brief resume of the progress which has been made, up to the present time, in the investigation and study of North American archaeology, The in creased activity among students devoting attention to the subject, the numerous explorations made, the rapid accumulation of data and the flood of light thrown on the questions relating to prehistoric North America since the. Publication of the last general work relating thereto, call for a new summary. Whether the work now offered meets this demand must be left for the readers to decide. That some parts of the broad field have been left unnoticed is admitted, the attention being confined chiefly to the more important characteristic features, as those best calculated to form an introduction to the subject; and as best calculated to interest the reader and younger students. With such an object in view, pages broken or interrupted by foot-notes are not only out of place, but often serve to break the thread the reader is following, or prove an interruption to his line of thought; reference notes have therefore been entirely omitted. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archeological Investigations in the Parita and Santa Maria Zones of Panama The geography Of Panama is best visualized in terms of the volcanic cordillera which, running in a generally east-west direction, separates the wet and dense tropical forests Of the Caribbean coast from the drier and somewhat more seasonal savannas and hilly areas of the southern watershed. This distinction is somewhat blurred in the corridor of the Canal Zone, but even in Darien to the east, where the cordillera is lower and more scattered and where dense tropical growth extends to the Pacific shore, the southern coast remains the drier. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fort Michilimackinac Archeological Investigations, 1974 and 1975 Excavation procedures and controls employed in the excavation of the magazine continued those used by earlier investigators at Michilimackinac. Whenever possible, features were followed as units in and of themselves. Otherwise, arbitrary controls were used. In the latter case, levels and the contents within them were kept scrupulously within the 10 feet grid system established initially in 1959, and followed ever since. Features were numbered consecutively. The magazine itself was not assigned a feature number. Each level was determined by an absolute elevation taken from one of three semi permanent elevation markers which served as datums. All materials were sifted through quarter - inch or one-eighthwyfan inch wire mesh screens, except in those instances where finer screening was necessary, specifically those of feature excavations. In the latter case, dirt was forced through window screen with water from a hose. Isolated lenses of sterile soils within the overlying fill were sometimes removed without sifting. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Archaeological Investigations in Ontario There are three hundred and twenty small circular beads of various diameters and lengths (plate IV, Fig. These were cut out of some large, heavy marine shell. The structure of the shell substance resembles that of the shell of the large gasteropod F ulgur per-verso from the Mexican Gulf and the south-eastern coast of the United States. Many of the mounds of western Canada and the Dakotas have yielded large beads which have been made from the shells of this mollusc. One larger ornament, probably a pendant for the neck or breast, is a piece of sea-shell two and one-half inches in greatest length, evidently cut from two of the whorls of F ulgur perverra, and having the aperture for suspension bored from both sides. Like all the others it shows great age. (see plate IV, Fig. All of the remains were above the original surface of the ground, and were not deposited in any special pit or excavation. There were no skulls or bones of any large animal above them, nor was there a layer or covering of wooden poles or of a calcareous material present. Stones alone con stituted their covering along with the vast heap of soil above. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
