Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Digital Museums in the Global South

Download or read book Digital Museums in the Global South written by Emma Duester and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on digital museums in the context of Vietnam and contributes to global discussions on the development of digital museum offerings needed to meet audience demands, requirements for sustainable digitisation methods for cultural heritage, demands for the development of intellectual property protection for the digital environment, and shows ways for national governments to support digital museums. Duester provides insight into museums in part of the Global South, where infrastructure funding and technical and human resource constraints impact the take-up and display of digital content. With on-the-ground research from three Vietnamese museums, Duester argues for a museum framework that is sustainable, ethical, and culturally appropriate. The Vietnamese government’s strategy for digitalisation of culture, heritage, and museums is assessed, and the book includes a list of recommendations on sustainable digitisation methods, intellectual property protection measures for the digital environment, management, phygital business models, and new digital revenue streams. The volume will benefit scholars involved in the cultural and creative industries, as well as museum professionals and cultural policymakers who will value the book’s assessment of international standards, treaties, and conventions on copyright law and how they apply to museums, as well as the recommendations listed above.

Book Roman Urbanism in Italy

Download or read book Roman Urbanism in Italy written by Alessandro Launaro and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2024-02-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents new evidence for the development of commerce and inter-regional trade through survey and analysis of urban layout and architecture. The study of Roman urbanism – especially its early (Republican) phases – is extensively rooted in the evidence provided by a series of key sites, several of them located in Italy. Some of these Italian towns (e.g. Fregellae, Alba Fucens, Cosa) have received a great deal of scholarly attention in the past and they are routinely referenced as textbook examples, framing much of our understanding of the broad phenomenon of Roman urbanism. However, discussions of these sites tend to fall back on well-established interpretations, with relatively little or no awareness of more recent developments. This is remarkable, since our understanding of these sites has since evolved thanks to new archaeological fieldwork, often characterised by the pursuit of new questions and the application of new approaches. Similarly, new evidence from other sites has since prompted a reconsideration of time-honoured views about the nature, role and long-term trajectory of Roman towns in Italy. Tracing its origins in the Laurence Seminar on Roman Urbanism in Italy: recent discoveries and new directions, which took place at the Faculty of Classics of the University of Cambridge (27–28 May 2022), this volume brings together scholars whose recent work at key sites is contributing to expand, change or challenge our current knowledge and understanding of Roman urbanism in Italy. The individual chapters showcase some of the most recent methods and approaches applied to the study of Roman towns, discussing the broader implications of fresh archaeological discoveries from both well known and less widely known sites, from the Po Plain to Southern Italy, from the Republican to the Late Antique period (and beyond).

Book Cyprus in the Long Late Antiquity

Download or read book Cyprus in the Long Late Antiquity written by Panayiotis Panayides and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyprus was a thriving and densely populated late antique province. Contrary to what used to be thought, the Arab raids of the mid-seventh century did not abruptly bring the island’s prosperity to an end. Recent research instead highlights long-lasting continuity in both urban and rural contexts. This volume brings together historians and archaeologists working on diverse aspects of Cyprus between the sixth and eighth centuries. They discuss topics as varied as rural prosperity, urban endurance, artisanal production, civic and private religion and maritime connectivity. The role of the imperial administration and of the Church is touched upon in several contributions. Other articles place Cyprus back into its wider Mediterranean context. Together, they produce a comprehensive impression of the quality of life on the island in the long late antiquity.
