Book Archbishop Fulton Sheen the Contemporary Humanist

Download or read book Archbishop Fulton Sheen the Contemporary Humanist written by Emmanuel K. Ngwainmbi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-30 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a theological reflection of Sheen’s contribution to humanity and society. It analyzes the modern person from the Catholic doctrinal perspective, explores Fulton Sheen’s perception of the contemporary individual, and demonstrates that global economic, religious, and political crises cannot be resolved by focusing only on the mundane. It further underscores some contemporary anthropological challenges and proposes a philosophy and theology of life that can enable contemporary humans to know themselves better and make life worth living. The authors argue that advancements in science and technology have failed to prolong happiness; people are still frustrated, disillusioned, cynical, bored, and suicidal. This book enters the landscape of Sheen’s controversial pause before he was sanctified and provides a lengthy, liturgical extrapolation of Sheen’s Christian anthropology, wrestling with other thinkers and general concerns surrounding human angst in modern society.

Book Dismantling Cultural Borders Through Social Media and Digital Communications

Download or read book Dismantling Cultural Borders Through Social Media and Digital Communications written by Emmanuel K. Ngwainmbi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-18 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how social media and its networked communities dismantles, builds, and shapes identity. Social media has been instrumental, sometimes dangerously so, in binding together different communities; with thirteen original chapters by leading academics in the field, the volume investigates how belonging, togetherness, and loyalty is created in the digital sphere, in a way that transcends, and even dismantles, ethnic and national borders around the world. In tandem, the volume analyses the further threats to identity presented by the ease with which fabricated news and information spreads on social media, resulting in many users becoming unable to distinguish credible data from junk data. Social media is both creative and destructive in its influence on identity, and therefore the growing fake news crisis threatens the very stability of the world’s communities. This book provides relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area, including diverse case studies and analyses of social media experiences in indigenous and urban communities around the world, including China, Africa, and Central and South America.

Book The Cries of Jesus from the Cross

Download or read book The Cries of Jesus from the Cross written by Fulton J. Sheen and published by Sophia Institute Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As death approaches, the human heart speaks its greatest words of love to those it holds most dear. So it was with Jesus who in His final hours gave us seven last "words" rich with spiritual meaning for every human soul. For the first time ever, Archbishop Fulton Sheen's complete writings and reflections on Christ's last words have been compiled into this one book. Sheen shows how the seven words are, in fact, a full catechism on the spiritual life. From them, you'll learn the secrets to living the Beatitudes, ways to avoid the deadly vices of anger, envy, lust, and pride, and how to cultivate the heavenly virtues of fortitude, prudence, justice, and charity. Few books are such an inspiring call to sanctity, and few books are such a spiritual powerhouse. With Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen as your guide, you'll also learn: Why, during His Passion, Jesus never proclaimed his innocence. Why Jesus appealed to His Father to forgive, but did not Himself forgive directly. What Jesus' third word from the Cross says about lust. Why, like Jesus, the most innocent among us must suffer. Why darkness covered the earth after Jesus spoke his fourth word. The seven words spoken unto Jesus while He hung on the Cross and what they reveal about the impact of Christ's Passion on your soul. What the Passion says about judging others (and why it's an assault against hope). How the conversion of the good thief is the key to the conversion of our modern world. Why you and I can sin a thousand times and be forgiven, and the angels who have sinned but once are eternally unforgiven. How envy becomes the denial of all justice and love. The difference between the virtue of hope and the emotion of hope.

Book The Preaching of Archbishop Fulton J Sheen

Download or read book The Preaching of Archbishop Fulton J Sheen written by Timothy H. Sherwood and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatness of America's most influential preachers of the twentieth century came from their significant contributions to both religious and secular society. Some names, like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Billy Graham, are universally recognized and typically thought of first by people today. Assorted reviews have also listed other notable names from various Christian denominations, but little recognition has been given to the Catholic contribution to preaching in the twentieth century. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen is at least one Catholic name whose contributions belong with the top most influential American preachers of that era. Though many associate Sheen with his five years on prime time television in the 1950s, it was the decades he spent preaching that wrought a religious tone to the Cold War and led the way in a national renewal of religion. An epic battle was set between the forces of good and evil in Sheen's preaching, particularly in his Good Friday sermons. This rhetorical study seeks to understand how and why his preaching was so persuasive to the people of his day.

Book An Essay by a Modern Humanist

Download or read book An Essay by a Modern Humanist written by James Green and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While starting with a view of the Judaic/Christian religion, as the cultural background to Western thought, the essay proceeds to examine the nature of reality as perceived by the human mind, and how that mind fits into a current culture developing within a scientific and technological environment. Readers are led along paths of logic to the point where logic seems to cease to function, then left to consider the issues themselves. However, it is claimed to be reasonably well proven that a free society cannot be permanent within a social structure deriving from a pleasure pain philosophy. The work evolves this proposal logically with outcomes which question much that is accepted by society as a whole, before returning to the theme of what reality is. Given the subject matter, the writing style is light and conversational, even, in its examination of mathematical definitions, sometimes bordering on the whimsical. Yet, the content is undeniably serious, the character of the presentation reflecting the need for objectivity and respect for proven fact which was implicit to the ethos of the early humanists. It is, clearly, aimed at a wider audience than the academic reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to author Patrick Kelly, Catholics have always engaged in play and sports. During the Middle Ages, games and sports were played on feast days and Sundays, and these activities are shown in prayer books, in woodcuts, and on stained-glass windows in churches and cathedrals. Contrary to the view of some sports historians, pre-Reformation Christians did not "loathe the flesh" but instead insisted on the unity of body and soul. Book jacket.
