Moreover, Mexico has the most advanced movie industry in the Spanish-speaking world, and its impact on Mexican culture and society cannot be overstated. Mexico's Cinema: A Century of Film and Filmmakers is a collection of fourteen essays that encompass the first 100 years of the cinema of Mexico. Included are original contributions written specifically for this title, plus a few classic pieces in the field of Mexican cinema studies never before available in English. These essays explore a variety of themes including race and ethnicity, gender issues, personalities, and the historical development of a national cinematic style. Each of the book's three sections-The Silent Cinema, The Golden Age, and The Contemporary Era-is preceded by a short introduction to the period and a presentation of the major themes addressed in the section. This insightful anthology is the first published study that includes pieces by Mexican and North American scholars, including a piece by the internationally acclaimed essayist Carlos Monsivais. Contributors include other acclaimed scholars and critics as well as young scholars who are currently making their mark in the area of film studies of Mexico. These authors represent various fields-community studies, film studies, cultural history, ethnic studies, and gender studies-making this volume an interdisciplinary resource, important for courses in Latin America and Third World cinema, Mexican history and culture, and Chicana/o and ethnic studies.

Book Blood on the Moon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alan K. Rode
  • Publisher : University of New Mexico Press
  • Release : 2023
  • ISBN : 0826364691
  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Blood on the Moon written by Alan K. Rode and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Of those movies categorized as "Noir Westerns" by writers and historians, Blood on the Moon is at the top of the list. Produced during the height of the post-World War II film noir movement, the picture transplanted the dark urban environs of the city into the western iconography. Instead of being framed in a Monument Valley sunset, Robert Mitchum's lone horseman opens the picture as a solitary figure in a dark rainstorm as the Arizona trail replicates the rain slicked streets of Los Angeles. Mitchum's existentialist character of Jim Garry is at odds with the traditional Western hero. Labeled as a "loose rider," he possesses nothing but a borrowed cattleman's outfit. Garry's loyalties shift during his sojourn in an alienist domain where things are assuredly not what they initially seem. The chiaroscuro lighting during the claustrophobic interior scenes and those at nighttime (comprising nearly half the film) depict isolated faces bathed in a stream of light against a black background. Blood on the Moon is a classic western immersed in the film noir netherworld of double crosses, government corruption, shabby barrooms, gun toting goons and romantic betrayals. Blood on the Moon was the first" A" picture directed by thirty-four-year-old Robert Wise (The Set Up, The Day the Earth Stood Still, I Want to Live, Odds Against Tomorrow, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, The Sand Pebbles)"--

Book A New Tree of Life for Planetary Ascension

Download or read book A New Tree of Life for Planetary Ascension written by David K. Miller and published by Light Technology Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David K. Miller has teamed up with Torah scholar and Kabbalist expert Mordechai Yashin, who resides in Jerusalem, Israel, to bring you A New Tree of Life for Planetary Ascension, which is based on unique lectures and classes David and Mordechai gave over an eight-month period between 2012 and 2013. It functions as a manual explaining the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and the Arcturian Planetary Tree of Life, which is an expansion of the concepts contained in the Kabbalistic tree. The idea behind the Arcturian Planetary Tree of Life is to demonstrate through a paradigm shift how planetary energies can be used to rebalance our planet. The basic assumption is that Earth is currently unbalanced due to a variety of factors, including environmental contamination, global warming, and usage and extinctions of forests and ocean life on a mass basis. It must be pointed out that David has been working with the Arcturians to further upgrade the Planetary Tree of Life. This upgrade includes one completely new sphere that relates to the ascension and to the fifth dimension. This new sphere will be described in detail to explain how to use the new energy. Includes: Great pictorial descriptions of the Hebrew letters Detailed Kabbalistic map and paradigm of the Tree of Life Hebrew terminology and numbers relating to the Tree of Life Featured channelings through David K. Miller

Burroughs, Neal Cassady, and John Clellon Holmes to his periods of solitude and the phenomenal breakthroughs of 1951 that resulted in his composition of On the Road followed by Visions of Cody, Johnson shows how his French Canadian background drove him to forge a voice that could contain his dualities and informed his unique outsider’s vision of America. This revelatory portrait deepens our understanding of a man whose life and work hold an enduring place in both popular culture and literary history.

Book Phantom Lady

Download or read book Phantom Lady written by Christina Lane and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Mystery Writers of America's 2021 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Critical/Biographical In 1933, Joan Harrison was a twenty-six-year-old former salesgirl with a dream of escaping both her stodgy London suburb and the dreadful prospect of settling down with one of the local boys. A few short years later, she was Alfred Hitchcock's confidante and one of the Oscar-nominated screenwriters of his first American film, Rebecca. Harrison had quickly grown from being the worst secretary Hitchcock ever had to one of his closest collaborators, critically shaping his brand as the "Master of Suspense." Harrison went on to produce numerous Hollywood features before becoming a television pioneer as the producer of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. A respected powerhouse, she acquired a singular reputation for running amazingly smooth productions— and defying anyone who posed an obstacle. She built most of her films and series from the ground up. She waged rough-and-tumble battles against executives and censors, and even helped to break the Hollywood blacklist. She teamed up with many of the most respected, well-known directors, writers, and actors of the twentieth century. And she did it all on her own terms. Author Christina Lane shows how this stylish, stunning woman became Hollywood's most powerful female writer-producer—one whom history has since overlooked.
