This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archaisms of Terence Mentioned in the Commentary of Donatus: Thesis, 1899, John's Hopkins University The Greek words and quotations in Donatus are in a deplorable state. Sometimes a space was left by the scribe to be filled in by some one more conversant with the language than himself, and it was never done; Often the words are confused or mutilated beyond recognition, or else omitted altogether, with a consequent confusion in the note. Klotz has done something to restore the text, but, Of course, the task can hardly be other than a hopeless one. Book Terence and the Language of Roman Comedy

Download or read book Terence and the Language of Roman Comedy written by Evangelos Karakasis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-16 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive examination of the language of Roman comedy in general and that of Terence in particular. The study explores Terence's use of language to differentiate his characters and his language in relation to the language of the comic fragments of the palliata, the togata and the atellana. Linguistic categories in the Terentian corpus explored include colloquialisms, archaisms, hellenisms and idiolectal features. Terence is shown to give his old men an old-fashioned and verbose tone, while low characters are represented as using colloquial diction. An examination of Eunuchus' language shows it to be closer to the Plautine linguistic tradition. The book also provides a thorough linguistic/stylistic commentary on all the fragments of the palliata, the togata and the atellana. It shows that Terence, except in the case of his Eunuchus, consciously distances himself from the linguistic/stylistic tradition of Plautus followed by all other comic poets.

Book Terence and the Verb to Be in Latin

Download or read book Terence and the Verb to Be in Latin written by Giuseppe Pezzini and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terence and the Verb 'To Be' in Latin is the first in-depth study of the verb 'to be' in Latin (esse) and some of its hidden properties. Like the English 'be' (e.g. it's), the Latin forms of esse could undergo phonetic reduction or contraction. This phenomenon is largely unknown since classical texts have undergone a long process of transmission over the centuries, which has altered or deleted its traces. Although they are often neglected by scholars and puzzling to students, the use of contracted forms is shown to be widespread and significant. These forms expose the clitic nature of esse, which also explains other properties of the verb, including its participation in a prosodic simplification with a host ending in -s (sigmatic ecthlipsis), a phenomenon which is also discussed in the volume. After an introduction on methodology, the volume discusses the linguistic significance of such phenomena, focusing in particular on analysis of their behaviour in the plays of the ancient Roman playwright, Terence. Combining traditional scholarship with the use of digital resources, the volume explores the orthographic, phonological, semantic, and syntactic aspects of the verb esse, revealing that cliticization is a key feature of the verb 'to be' in Latin, and that contractions deserve a place within its paradigm.
