Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Frison and Dennis Stanford's Agate Basin monograph is not only a classic of Plains paleoindian archaeology, but also of multidisciplinary research, geoarchaeology, zooarchaeology, and experimental archaeology. Lucid presentation of meticulously excavated and analyzed sediments, bones, and artifacts convey an unmatched sense of the sights, sounds, and smells of Paleoindian life on the High Plains-from brutal winters and blistering summers, to killing and butchering bison, and to making lethal weaponry. As Matthew Hill writes in his new prologue, "Not merely an important volume of the Frison canon, Agate Basin stands as a foundational document in modern Americanist archaeology and a major accomplishment in American science." Originally published by Academic Press in 1982.

Book An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology

Download or read book An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology written by Amalananda Ghosh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1990 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology" is a significant reference work on archaeology in India. It is an authoritative work of permanent value in which the knowledge and expertise of Indian archaeologists from the Archaeological Survey of India, universities and other institutes have been pooled together under the editorship of the late A. Ghosh, former Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India. The "Encyclopaedia" has been planned in an ambitious manner; it is not merely an alphabetical listing of entries with sketchy information on topics. Volume 1, which deals with certain broad subjects relating to Indian Archaeology, is divided into twenty chapters, alphabetically arranged. Each chapter is further divided into sections and subsections containing independent and self-contained essays. For example, in the chapter on "Cultures," detailed information can be found on various cultures in India; the chapter on "Basis of dating" contains articles on archaeological dating, archaeomagnetic dating, 14C radio-carbon dating, numismatic dating, palaeographic and epigraphic dating, thermoluminescent dating, etc. For those interested in getting further information on the subjects and in looking into the original sources and references, each entry also carries an exhaustive bibliography. Volume II is the Gazetteer. It contains basic data and information on all the explored and excavated sites in India along with reference to published reports and/or notices on each.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the middle of the 3rd millennium BC until the coming of Cyrus the Great, southwestern Iran was referred to in Mesopotamian sources as the land of Elam. A heterogeneous collection of regions, Elam was home to a variety of groups, alternately the object of Mesopotamian aggression, and aggressors themselves; an ethnic group seemingly swallowed up by the vast Achaemenid Persian empire, yet a force strong enough to attack Babylonia in the last centuries BC. The Elamite language is attested as late as the Medieval era, and the name Elam as late as 1300 in the records of the Nestorian church. This book examines the formation and transformation of Elam's many identities through both archaeological and written evidence, and brings to life one of the most important regions of Western Asia, re-evaluates its significance, and places it in the context of the most recent archaeological and historical scholarship.

Book A Re examination of the Palaeolithic Archaeological Record of Northern Tamil Nadu South India

Download or read book A Re examination of the Palaeolithic Archaeological Record of Northern Tamil Nadu South India written by Shanti Pappu and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2001 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concepts developed in the Kortallayar river basin, South India, especially those related to the 'Madras Handaxe tradition' of the Acheulian, and that of the relationship between culture sequences, river terraces and Pleistocene environments, determined the future course of Indian prehistoric archaeology. The present work arose out of a need to re-examine this classic area in Indian archaeology. It attempts to assign meaning to the variability seen in the Palaeolithic archaeological record of the Kortallayar river basin, and to put forward some alternative models of hominid adaptive strategies in the Middle to Late Pleistocene in this part of Northern Tamil Nadu. It includes critique of the terrace sequences proposed by previous researchers, examination of site formation processes operating in the region, regional analyses and the cautious application of an ethnographic approach to South Indian and Sri Lankan hunter-gatherer settlement and subsistence strategies and their archaeological correlates.
