Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swindlers, confidence men and outlaws--the mountain shadows and Ponderosa pines surrounding Prescott conceal their grim histories and crooked ways. The small hamlet turned mining town became Arizona's first capital in 1864, and with wealth and power came every type of vice and crime. One block west of the famed Whiskey Row, the roaring red-light district attracted ladies of easy virtue, who often became victims of crimes of passion and coldblooded murder. Legendary crook Fleming "Jim" Parker escaped from Yavapai County Jail on the back of the sheriff's stolen horse. Cattle rustlers terrorized nearby ranches, while tavern brawls and liquor-fueled shootouts dominated newspaper headlines. More than ten legal hangings brought criminals to justice. Local author Parker Anderson recounts these and more wicked misdeeds from Prescott's wild early days.

Download or read book America s National Game written by Albert G. Spalding and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is in great demand by baseball enthusiasts. Having been connected with every department of the game from player to magnate, Mr. Spalding has contributed a very important work to the game's history. As the invincible pitcher of the Boston Club, previous to the formation of the National League, his book of so many pages is an interesting record of events dating from the beginning of the great American pastime. It is not exactly a history of the game, but deals largely with incidents during the author's career, who was a player in the late 1860s and early 1870s, and helped organize the National League in 1876. One chapter, devoted to sundry topics, gives an account of the sale of the immortal "King Kelly," the original "$10,000 beauty," by Chicago to the Boston Club in the late 1880s. Other Chapters are devoted to the literature of the game, quoting several instances of the baseball paragrapher's art and also specimens of the distinct poetry of the pastime, of which "Casey at the Bat" is probably the most widely known. The Cincinnati Red Stockings Mr. Spalding gives credit as being the pioneer professional organization. It was not, however, until 1871 that professional baseball playing, as recognized today, was instituted. Mr. Spalding shows how cricket could not do for Americans. He says it is suitable for the British temperament, but not for the Yankee hustling spirit. He also tells how he worked into the game through a one-handed catch when a small boy. To lovers of baseball, whose name is legion, and whose number increases yearly, this book comprises in itself a whole library of useful information.
Download or read book Kumba Africa written by Sampson Ejike Odum and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations at seven sites in West Prescott, Arizona, provide new information on a poorly understood group. The results suggest a "pit house-figurine" population of the Prescott Culture who reinforced social identity through production of ceramic figurines in human and animal forms. Evidence indicates use of a range of local wild resources including large game, cultivation of maize and other domesticated plants, and trade in marine shell, Hohokam ceramics, and at least some of the Prescott Gray Ware pottery that is associated with this culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[Gladwin] accomplished, from the 1920's on, a series of fundamentally important studies of the prehistoric cultures of the region from Texas to California. None of these surveys or excavations was more important than the excavation of Snaketown, in the southern Arizona desert. It provided a wealth of details for a major prehistoric culture, the Hohokam, which previously had been scarcely recognized. It dislodged many long-held dogmas of Southwestern archaeology and provided the basis for a major reorientation in thinking about the nature of the prehistoric occupations of Arizona and adjacent states. . . . [This volume] has remained indispensable for its detailed reporting of house remains, ball courts, canals, cremations, pottery, carved stone, and other artifacts."—Science "The reprint will come as a blessing to many archaeologists who have sought in vain to obtain a copy of the original volume. It now stands as a body of data easily accessible to all workers, and we look forward to a new phase of synthesis of Hohokam archaeology."—American Antiquity

Download or read book Coyote Ruin NA 6654 a Prescott Area Community written by Mary Spall and published by . This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the archaeological work conducted at Coyote Ruin (NA 6654), a Prescott Culture site located northeast of Prescott Valley, Arizona. The field work for this project involved survey, mapping, excavation, and recording of rock art, followed by extensive analysis and write-up of the features and artifacts. Work began in November 1998 and concluded in April 2004 using volunteers from the Yavapai Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society. Data recovered indicates Coyote Ruin represents a record of human occupation from perhaps the A.D. 900s until after 1300. Excavations at the site in the late 1920s are the earliest in the Prescott area for which we have documentation. Included herein is the account of J. W. Simmons who worked at the site starting in 1927. The Yavapai Chapter conducted excavations at 11 of the 26 masonry rooms, 2 of the 10 pit structures, and documented many of the agricultural and water-control features. Ceramics recovered included Prescott Gray Ware, Verde Brown, and a range of tradewares mostly from the Kayenta and Little Colorado River areas. The abundance of projectile points and bones from deer, antelope, elk, and small mammals indicated the importance of hunting for the inhabitants. Archaeo-botanical analysis documented consumption of maize, harvesting of a variety of seeds, and use of agave. The concluding chapter of the report places the pueblo into a context of 13th to 14th century occupation in the Prescott area, discusses how the Prescott Culture was organized in this period, and provides some hypotheses that need to be examined with future research.
