Book The 2005 Archaeological Test Excavation of Site 48YE1312 Along the Virginia Cascades Drive Yellowstone National Park Wyoming

Download or read book The 2005 Archaeological Test Excavation of Site 48YE1312 Along the Virginia Cascades Drive Yellowstone National Park Wyoming written by Paul Hugh Sanders and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One prehistoric site along the Virginia Cascades Drive in central Yellowstone National Park was investigated during the present project. The investigation found that it was mostly comprised of surface obsidian flaking debris and a few chipped stone tools. A large, side-notched projectile point found on the site surface is suggestive of a probable Early Archaic affiliation. A previous investigation by Montana State University, Museum of the Rockies also found a Middle Archaic point on the site surface. The Office of the Wyoming State Archaeologist excavated 39 shovel tests in the gravelly soil, which yielded only six obsidian flakes, indicating little potential for intact buried cultural deposits. As a result, the site is recommended as not elibigle for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

Book Historical Archeology of Tourism in Yellowstone National Park

Download or read book Historical Archeology of Tourism in Yellowstone National Park written by Annalies Corbin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far too often in the ?eld of archeology, the wheel of understanding and insight has a narrow focus that fails to recognize critical studies. Crucial information rega- ing pivotal archeological investigations at a variety of sites worldwide is extremely dif?cult, if not impossible, to obtain. The majority of archeological analysis and reporting, at best, has limited publication. The majority of archeological reports are rarely seen and when published are often only in obscure or out-of-print journals – the reports are almost as hard to ?nd as the archeological sites themselves. There is a desperate need to pull seminal archeological writings together into single issue or thematic volumes. It is the int- tion of this series, When the Land Meets the Sea, to address this problem as it relates to archeological work that encompasses both terrestrial and underwater archeology on a single site or on a collection of related sites. For example, despite the fact that we know that bays and waterways structured historic settlement, there is a lack of archeological literature that looks at both the nautical and terrestrial signatures of watersheds in?uence on historic culture.

Book The 2010 Class III Archaeological Investigations of the Sheepeater Cliff Site 48ye29 Yellowstone National Park Wyoming

Download or read book The 2010 Class III Archaeological Investigations of the Sheepeater Cliff Site 48ye29 Yellowstone National Park Wyoming written by Matthew Clyde Werle and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of Montana conducted a full inventory of archaeological resources at the Sheepeater Cliff site (48YE29) in 2009-2010. Yellowstone National Park (YNP) proposes road widening and parking lot additions at the popular visitor attraction. The Sheepeater Cliff site (48YE29) is a prehistoric lithic scatter located near a popular rest stop and parking lot along the Norris to Mammoth Hot Springs Highway in the northern portion of YNP. The site is bounded by the Gardner River to the southeast and the columnar basalt cliffs from which it derives its name. 48YE29 was originally recorded in 1989. The University of Montana conducted Class III subsurface testing during the 2009 UM field season as part of inspired proactive management funded by YNP. Shovel testing was located on both sides of the parking lot access road, beginning just north of the parking lot and continuing on a linear axis, southwest, to a point in which the Gardner River creates a bend, approximately 10 meters from the access road. Further Class III testing of the site was completed during the UM 2010 field season, in response to a new proposed undertaking for Section 106 evaluation. The proposed project consists of a parking lot expansion of the rest stop. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) is 35 m wide by 92 m long. Twelve 1x1 m test units were placed within the APE and within the site0́9s boundaries in order to determine the depth and significance of archaeological deposits. The total acreage of the APE is approximately 0.5 acres. This report details the findings of the fieldwork from 2009-2010 excavations, in addition to providing a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility recommendation in fulfillment of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) provided for the National Park Service and submitted to the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). Maps and other location data has been removed under the requirements of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 (ARPA).

Book Archaeological Data Recovery Phases 1 and 2 at the Nymph Lake Site 48YE114 a 2200 Year Old Obsidian Workshop Near Obsidian Cliff in Yellowstone National Park Wyoming

Download or read book Archaeological Data Recovery Phases 1 and 2 at the Nymph Lake Site 48YE114 a 2200 Year Old Obsidian Workshop Near Obsidian Cliff in Yellowstone National Park Wyoming written by Paul H. Sanders and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of data recovery excavations at the Nymph Lake site, 48YE114 in order to mitigate anticipated impacts from the proposed realignment of the Norris Junction to Mammoth Road. As a result of the 2004-2005 data recovery, a total of 124 shovel tests and 55 m2 were excavated. The excavations uncovered the remains of a small temporary campsite that was primarily occupied around 2200 years ago during the Late Archaic period. Evidence of a Late Prehistoric occupation is also present. Within the Late Archaic component, large quantities of obsidian flaking debris and tools were found in addition to one hearth feature and a layer of burned rock. The obsidian debitage represents the full range of lithic reduction from the initial removal of cortex to fine pressure flaking of finished implements. The relatively few pieces of non-obsidian flaking debris are mostly small items associated with tool retouch. A lithic concentration centered within the South Block excavation area appears to have been produced by a few individuals. Although, the adverse effects to the site from the proposed road reroutes have been mitigated, the site is still recommended as eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The site will be impacted by the proposed road reroute, although the exact route is not precisely known. The data recovery efforts have mitigated the adverse effects of the proposed road reroutes. However, monitoring of the topsoil removal during construction by a qualified archaeologist is recommended to ensure that any uncovered features can be properly salvaged.
