Book Albert A Pe a Jr

Download or read book Albert A Pe a Jr written by José Angel Gutiérrez and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2017-07-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political and social impact that Albert A. Peña Jr. had on the lives of Mexican Americans, and later Chicanos, is by all counts immeasurable. However, in part because Chicano biography has traditionally been a neglected research area among academics generally and Chicano Studies scholars specifically, his life’s work has not featured prominently in any biographical work to date, making this volume the first of its kind. It provides a richly detailed documentation of Peña’s life and career, from blue collar worker to judge and essay writer, spanning nearly ninety years. Readers will find that at the heart of his story is a focus on grassroots organizing and politics, sharing leadership, and a commitment to social justice.

Book excerpt: Winner, Susan Koppelman Award, Best Edited Volume in Women's Studies in Popular and American Culture, 2008 The 1970s and 1980s saw the awakening of social awareness and political activism in Mexican-American communities. In San Diego, a group of Chicana women participated in a political theatre group whose plays addressed social, gender, and political issues of the working class and the Chicano Movement. In this collective memoir, seventeen women who were a part of Teatro de las Chicanas (later known as Teatro Laboral and Teatro Raíces) come together to share why they joined the theatre and how it transformed their lives. Teatro Chicana tells the story of this troupe through chapters featuring the history and present-day story of each of the main actors and writers, as well as excerpts from the group's materials and seven of their original short scripts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as “The Salad Bowl of the World,” California’s Salinas Valley became an agricultural empire due to the toil of diverse farmworkers, including Latinos. A sweeping critical history of how Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants organized for their rights in the decades leading up to the seminal strikes led by Cesar Chavez, this important work also looks closely at how different groups of Mexicans—U.S. born, bracero, and undocumented—confronted and interacted with one another during this period. An incisive study of labor, migration, race, gender, citizenship, and class, Lori Flores’s first book offers crucial insights for today’s ever-growing U.S. Latino demographic, the farmworker rights movement, and future immigration policy.

Book El Cinco de Mayo

  • Author : David Hayes-Bautista
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2012-05-05
  • ISBN : 0520951794
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book El Cinco de Mayo written by David Hayes-Bautista and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-05-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is Cinco de Mayo—a holiday commemorating a Mexican victory over the French at Puebla in 1862—so widely celebrated in California and across the United States, when it is scarcely observed in Mexico? As David E. Hayes-Bautista explains, the holiday is not Mexican at all, but rather an American one, created by Latinos in California during the mid-nineteenth century. Hayes-Bautista shows how the meaning of Cinco de Mayo has shifted over time—it embodied immigrant nostalgia in the 1930s, U.S. patriotism during World War II, Chicano Power in the 1960s and 1970s, and commercial intentions in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, it continues to reflect the aspirations of a community that is engaged, empowered, and expanding.

Book Orthogonal Transforms for Digital Signal Processing

Download or read book Orthogonal Transforms for Digital Signal Processing written by N. Ahmed and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended for those wishing to acquire a working knowledge of orthogonal transforms in the area of digital signal processing. The authors hope that their introduction will enhance the opportunities for interdiscipli nary work in this field. The book consists of ten chapters. The first seven chapters are devoted to the study of the background, motivation and development of orthogonal transforms, the prerequisites for which are a basic knowledge of Fourier series transform (e.g., via a course in differential equations) and matrix al gebra. The last three chapters are relatively specialized in that they are di rected toward certain applications of orthogonal transforms in digital signal processing. As such, a knowlegde of discrete probability theory is an essential additional prerequisite. A basic knowledge of communication theory would be helpful, although not essential. Much of the material presented here has evolved from graduate level courses offered by the Departments of Electrical Engineering at Kansas State University and the University of Texas at Arlington, during the past five years. With advanced graduate students, all the material was covered in one semester. In the case of first year graduate students, the material in the first seven chapters was covered in one semester. This was followed by a prob lems project-oriented course directed toward specific applications, using the material in the last three chapters as a basis.
