Book Place Names of Hawaii

Download or read book Place Names of Hawaii written by Mary Kawena Pukui and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1976-12-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many place names are there in the Hawaiian Islands? Even a rough estimate is impossible. Hawaiians named taro patches, rocks, trees, canoe landings, resting places in the forests, and the tiniest spots where miraculous events are believed to have taken place. And place names are far from static--names are constantly being given to new houses and buildings, streets and towns, and old names are replaced by new ones. It is essential, then, to record the names and the lore associated with them now, while Hawaiians are here to lend us their knowledge. And, whatever the fate of the Hawaiian language, the place names will endure. The first edition of Place Names of Hawaii contained only 1,125 entries. The coverage is expanded in the present edition to include about 4,000 entries, including names in English. Also, approximately 800 more names are included in this volume than appear in the second edition of the Atlas of Hawaii.

This book was released on 1959-01-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A valuable library addition for either a folklorist, a linguist, or an ethnologist." --Western Folklore "The stories in this book are reprinted from Volumes IV and V of The Fornander Collection of Hawaiian Antiquities and Folk-lore, published by the Bernice P. Bishop Museum in 1917, 1918, and 1919. They include some of the best-loved of Hawaiian stories, and the collection is probably the most important work on a traditional subject ever published in the Hawaiian language.... In the 1860s and 1870s, Abraham Fornander, circuit judge of Maui, employed several Hawaiians to seek out learned Hawaiians and write down their stories. The collectors included S. N. Kamakau, S. Haleole, and Kepelino Keauokalani, each of whom has made important contributions to our knowledge of the old culture." -from the Introduction

Download or read book Walter Francis Dillingham 1875 1963 written by Howard Brett Melendy and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography describes the career of a key figure during the years of the Territory of Hawaii, adding to the incomplete history of Hawaii in the first half of the 20th century. Dillingham's accomplishments had a profound effect upon the development and growth of the territory. He and his Hawaiian Dredging Company changed greatly the shoreline of Honolulu, and helped shape the character of the city. Dillingham played a key role in the creation of Pearl Harbor as the Navy's major mid-Pacific naval base. His company was an integral factor in building naval airbases throughout the Pacific prior to and during World War II. He inherited the presidency of the Oahu Railway and Land Company from his father, and the railroad remained central to the island's transportation system for 30 years, furthering the expansion of sugar and pineapple plantations on Oahu. Given their major position in island society, he was able to entertain key national figures, helping influence mainland decisions affecting the future of the islands.

Book Archaeological Investigations in Upland Kaneohe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period 1972 to 1976, the Department of Anthropology, Bernice P. Bishop Museum, conducted several archaeological projects in connection with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Kaneohe-Kailua Flood-Control Project. The objectives of the successive archaeological projects were simply: the identification and preliminary evaluation of archaeological resources present within the project area; more intensive recording and testing of specific sites, to evaluate significance and to determine potential for yeilding important information through any recommended subsequent work; and complete salvage of the single prehistoric site, as the appropriate mitigation for the adverse effect of sire destruction by planned dam construction. In most instances, a project scope of work was based on recommendations derived from the findings of the previous project.
