Yet stories of how these artifacts were acquired often reveal unethical acts and troubling chains of possession, as well as unexpected instances of collaboration. For instance, archaeological excavation of Aboriginal graves was so prevalent in the late-eighteenth century that the government of Upper Canada legislated against it, although this did little to stop the practice. Many objects were collected by non-Native outsiders to preserve cultures perceived to be nearing extinction, while other objects were donated or sold by the same Native communities that later demanded their return. Some Native people collected for museums and even created their own.

It is hoped that it will be in some measure a contribution to our knowledge of a small but important episode in Canadian history; namely, the activities of the Jesuit Fathers in the decade of their residence among the Huron Indians. In the decade of their residence among the Hurons, the Jesuits attempted to build a native commonwealth founded on Christian belief: an attempt which was suddenly and utterly ended by the Iroquois raids of 1649. The very heart and core of this famous enterprise was the establishment called by the Jesuits themselves Ste Marie. Hitherto, knowledge of it has been confined to what could be learned from written records; this can now be augmented, especially in regard to its physical aspects, with the information obtained by means of archaeology, and presented in this report.

Book excerpt: The First Nations who have lived in the Great Lakes watershed have been strongly influenced by the imposition of colonial and national boundaries there. The essays in Lines Drawn upon the Water examine the impact of the Canadian—American border on communities, with reference to national efforts to enforce the boundary and the determination of local groups to pursue their interests and define themselves. Although both governments regard the border as clearly defined, local communities continue to contest the artificial divisions imposed by the international boundary and define spatial and human relationships in the borderlands in their own terms. The debate is often cast in terms of Canada’s failure to recognize the 1794 Jay Treaty’s confirmation of Native rights to transport goods into Canada, but ultimately the issue concerns the larger struggle of First Nations to force recognition of their people’s rights to move freely across the border in search of economic and social independence.
