Book Cultural Resources Survey and Monitoring of Joint Task Force Six JTF 6 Actions in Webb Zapata Dimmit La Salle Duvall and Jim Hogg Counties Texas

Download or read book Cultural Resources Survey and Monitoring of Joint Task Force Six JTF 6 Actions in Webb Zapata Dimmit La Salle Duvall and Jim Hogg Counties Texas written by Stephen P. Austin and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of JTF-6 actions representing federal projects in six south Texas counties, cultural resource evaluations and monitoring were required for the areas that were to be impacted by the construction actions. These actions included the repair and related construction of approximately 240 km of existing firebreaks along highways in the six-county area, the upgrade of two small-arms firing ranges, the repair/upgrade of 9.5 km of road along Ow Rio Grande, and the construction of a fitness/obstacle course and the upgrade of an existing firing range in Laredo. All areas were intensively surveyed and monitored for evidence of prehistoric and historic cultural resources, with areas of high probability closely examined. Extensive previous disturbance was noted within the impact areas of the firebreaks and at the two firing ranges, but no cultural resources were located in these areas. Along the Rio Grande, the survey identified Star Fort (part of historic Fort McIntosh), which was crossed by the road improvement project and the San Ygnacio Historic District. These sites are listed on the National Register and were avoided except for the grading of an existing road adjacent to the remains of Star Fort (which resulted in no damage to the historic property). The proposed fitness/obstacle course is located within an old industrial area that has been previously determined to lack significant cultural resources. Therefore, the road improvement/ construction activities of the JTF-6 action resulted in no impacts to the cultural resources of the areas. Cultural resources evaluation and monitoring of areas to be impacted by JTF-6 actions in and around Laredo, Texas.

Book Archeological Survey for JTF 6 Road Improvements in Presidio and Jeff Davis Counties Texas

Download or read book Archeological Survey for JTF 6 Road Improvements in Presidio and Jeff Davis Counties Texas written by Mark Sale and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of a cultural resources survey which was conducted along approximately 90 mi of existing road rights-of-way and 1.5 mi of proposed new road rights-of-way in Presidio and Jeff Davis counties, Texas. The study was undertaken to provide archeological clearance for road improvements that are designed to assist the U.S. Border Patrol in accessing the International Boundary. A total of 27 new archeological sites and 42 isolated occurrences was identified as a result of the survey and one site (4lPS13) was rerecorded. Twenty-one of these sites are attributable to prehistoric activities and five sites are attributable to historic activities. One site contained both prehistoric and historic artifacts. Thirteen of the newly recorded sites are considered to be ineligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The remaining 15 sites are recommended as potentially eligible for inclusion on the NRHP. A total of 20 previously recorded sites was revisited. Five sites documented during this project and six previously recorded sites are located on Texas State lands. With the exception of 41PS762 and 41PS763, these sites are also considered potentially eligible for the NRHP. Sites located within the right-of way which might be impacted during this undertakIng were flagged for avoidance. By limiting modification of the existing roadbed in the vicinity of these sites, adverse impacts as a result of road improvements were avoided.
