Two of the specimens of this lot show well-preserved impressions of winding, exactly as would be the case if they formed parts of a harpoon-point.' A bone harpoon-point made wholly of one piece of material, and with a barb, _ was found (fig. 337, a). The barb, however, is broken off. The base is wedge-shaped, and could easily be inserted in the split end Of a handle. Such harpoon-points, I was told by Baptiste, an old shaman who is still familiar with the ancient implements Of 'the Indians, were used for spearing beaver.2 A similar point, also said to be used for beaver-spearing, was secured by Mr. Teit from the Indians at Spences Bridge. Two other harpoon-points (fig. 33 7, b, c) are much burned, and, as both are broken, their original shape cannot be determined. There are many pieces still less perfect, which were found scattered on the surface of the large burial-ground at Kamloops, while other pieces were found with cremated bones of children at the Government Site. Fig. 338 (2 illustrates a bone object found on the surface of the Government Hill at Kamloops. It has been bleached and somewhat warped by the sun. The notch in the end extends slightly down the sides, but shows no rubbing. Fig. 338 6 illustrates a similar-shaped speci men made of wood, which was found in a woven pbuch in the grave at Spences Bridge. A 5 Still adhering to it are shreds of cedar-bark, while traces of red ochre cover it. The notch is rectangular, and the other end Of the specimen is pointed like a sharpened lead pencil. These specimens seem to be fore shafts for arrows or spears, the former possibly for a spear, while the latter, being delicate, would be more appropriate for a small arrow. Book excerpt: Paleobiology struggled for decades to influence our understanding of evolution and the history of life because it was stymied by a focus on microevolution and an incredibly patchy fossil record. But in the 1970s, the field took a radical turn, as paleobiologists began to investigate processes that could only be recognized in the fossil record across larger scales of time and space. That turn led to a new wave of macroevolutionary investigations, novel insights into the evolution of species, and a growing prominence for the field among the biological sciences. In The Quality of the Archaeological Record, Charles Perreault shows that archaeology not only faces a parallel problem, but may also find a model in the rise of paleobiology for a shift in the science and theory of the field. To get there, he proposes a more macroscale approach to making sense of the archaeological record, an approach that reveals patterns and processes not visible within the span of a human lifetime, but rather across an observation window thousands of years long and thousands of kilometers wide. Just as with the fossil record, the archaeological record has the scope necessary to detect macroscale cultural phenomena because it can provide samples that are large enough to cancel out the noise generated by micro-scale events. By recalibrating their research to the quality of the archaeological record and developing a true macroarchaeology program, Perreault argues, archaeologists can finally unleash the full contributive value of their discipline.

Book excerpt: When the Spanish colonized it in AD 1769, the California Coast was inhabited by speakers of no fewer than 16 distinct languages and an untold number of small, autonomous Native communities. These societies all survived by foraging, and ethnohistoric records show a wide range of adaptations emphasizing a host of different marine and terrestrial foods. Many groups exhibited signs of cultural complexity including sedentism, high population density, permanent social inequality, and sophisticated maritime technologies. The ethnographic era was preceded by an archaeological past that extends back to the terminal Pleistocene. Essays in this volume explore the last three and one half millennia of this long history, focusing on the archaeological signatures of emergent cultural complexity. Organized geographically, they provide an intricate mosaic of archaeological, historic, and ethnographic findings that illuminate cultural changes over time. To explain these Late Holocene cultural developments, the authors address issues ranging from culture history, paleoenvironments, settlement, subsistence, exchange, ritual, power, and division of labor, and employ both ecological and post-modern perspectives. Book excerpt: The Makah Indians of Washington State--briefly in the national spotlight when they resumed their ancient whaling traditions in 1999--have begun a process that will eventually lead to the repatriation of objects held by museums and federal agencies nationwide. Drawing Back Culture describes the early stages of the tribe's implementation of what some consider to be the most important piece of cultural policy legislation in the history of the United States: the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). NAGPRA was passed by Congress in 1990 to give Native people a mechanism through which they could reclaim specific objects of importance to the tribe. Because NAGPRA definitions were intended for widespread applicability, each tribe must negotiate a fit between these definitions and their own material culture. The broad range of viewpoints within any given tribal community creates internal negotiations over NAGPRA surrounding the identification and eventual return of such objects. Negotiations also arise concerning the nature of ownership. At the heart of this ongoing struggle are themes relevant to indigenous studies worldwide: the central role of material culture in cultural revitalization movements, concerns with intellectual property rights and self-representation, and the trend towards professional cultural resource management among indigenous peoples. The conception of ownership lies at the heart of the Makahs' struggle to implement NAGPRA. Tweedie explores their historical patterns of ownership, and demonstrates the challenges of implementing legislation which presumes a concept of communal ownership foreign to the Makahs' highly developed and historically documented patterns of personal ownership of both material culture and intellectual property. Drawing Back Culture explores how NAGPRA implementation has been working at the tribal level, from the perspective of a tribe struggling to fit the provisions of the law with its own sense of history, ownership, and the drive for cultural renewal.
