Book The Archaeology of Historic Travel Routes in the Siskiyou Mountains

Download or read book The Archaeology of Historic Travel Routes in the Siskiyou Mountains written by Justin D. Rohde and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For the First Nations of North America, foot trails long provided the main source of transportation behind rivers and the ocean, with individual trails stretching far beyond each tribe's ancestral homeland. In the upper Illinois River Valley and greater Siskiyou Mountains, trails supported complex groups of 'hunter-gatherer-fishers' long before the arrival of gold seeking 'whites'. Modern tribes operating today include the Karuk Tribe, individual member tribes of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation, Yurok Tribe, The Klamath Tribes and others. This thesis serves to identify and interpret ancestral travel routes in the Siskiyou Mountains, with a focus on the Illinois River Valley, situated along the border of southwestern Oregon and northwestern California. By combining archaeological evidence with archival based research, the study seeks to better understand the relationship of trails to the (pre)history of modern tribes, and the contribution ancestral trails played in the rapid development of southern Oregon and northern California. Indian trails described in the written records of fur trappers and explorers were utilized in the colonization and settlement of North America. Indian trails served as the primary routes fur trappers... used to explore the region. This thesis presents evidence of early settlers and gold miners using Indian trails to develop their first settlements and mining camps, improving them for use by pack animals and wagon trains to supply a growing population of immigrants flooding into Indian Territory."--adapted from leaf 3.

Book Trading Beyond the Mountains

Download or read book Trading Beyond the Mountains written by Richard S. Mackie and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the North West and Hudsons Bay companies extended their operations beyond the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. There they encountered a mild and forgiving climate and abundant natural resources and, with the aid of Native traders, branched out into farming, fishing, logging, and mining. Following its merger with the North West Company in 1821, the Hudsons Bay Company set up its headquarters at Fort Vancouver on the lower Columbia River. From there, the company dominated much of the non-Native economy, sending out goods to markets in Hawaii, Sitka, and San Francisco. Trading Beyond the Mountains looks at the years of exploration between 1793 and 1843 leading to the commercial development of the Pacific coast and the Cordilleran interior of western North America. Mackie examines the first stages of economic diversification in this fur trade region and its transformation into a dynamic and distinctive regional economy. He also documents the Hudsons Bay Companys employment of Native slaves and labourers in the North West coast region.
