Book Prehistory of the Oregon Coast

Download or read book Prehistory of the Oregon Coast written by R Lee Lyman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first synthesis of the prehistory of the coast of Oregon. It analyzes the artifacts and mammalian faunal remains of three representative sites on the coast. A model of the evolution of cultural adaptational strategies is presented and tested, from which it creates a model of coastal cultural development. On a methodological level, the volume examines the overriding importance and effects of various sampling techniques.

Book Archaeological Investigations at Tahkenitch Landing Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area Siuslaw National Forest

Download or read book Archaeological Investigations at Tahkenitch Landing Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area Siuslaw National Forest written by Rick Minor and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intensive survey and auger testing program carried out within a 12-acre project area at Tahkenitch Landing resulted in the refinement of the boundaries of an archaeological site discovered during previous archaeological investigations. The archaeological site (35DO130) consists of a midden of dark organically-stained sediments containing aboriginal artifacts, charcoal, marine shell fragments, and animal remains. The site occupies an area 160 meters by 50 meters along the west shore of Tahkenitch Lake. Although the site has been disturbed, the results of this project suggest that it still contains considerable potential for yielding new information concerning Oregon coast pre-history. Further archaeological testing and analysis will be necessary, however, before the significance of the site can be documents.

Book Archaeological Investigations at the Seal Rock Site 35LNC14

Download or read book Archaeological Investigations at the Seal Rock Site 35LNC14 written by Linda Ann Clark and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seal Rock (35LNC14) is a late prehistoric shell midden site located on the central Oregon coast. Information derived from the faunal remains, radiocarbon dates, and location and size of the midden deposits suggest the site represents a late littoral stage of cultural adaptation. Analyses of lithic artifacts, and bone and antler tools provide information on the technological and functional aspects of this stage of adaptation. The presence of certain varieties of projectile points, composite harpoon valves, and fishing implements compliment evidence of procurement activities provided by the recovered faunal remains. Comparisons of the Seal Rock tool assemblage with those from sites located along the southern Northwest Coast reveal that technological influences from archaeological cultures located to the north and south are present at the Seal Rock site.

Book Searching for Early Archaeological Sites Along the Central Oregon Coast

Download or read book Searching for Early Archaeological Sites Along the Central Oregon Coast written by Steve Jenevein and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Locating archaeological sites that predate the arrival of modern sea level has been difficult along the Oregon coast. This is in part believed to be the result of geologic processes that have influenced the preservation, distribution, and visibility of sites within the Oregon coastal landscape. Because of these changes, researchers have a poor understanding of where sites that predate modern sea level are located within the modern landscape. Geoarchaeological techniques and concepts are well suited to address these types of questions and can help place the fragments of a once much larger paleocoastal landscape into a modern context. In this thesis I use a Geographic Information System (GIS) and geoarchaeological field and laboratory techniques and concepts to conceptualize, locate, and evaluate landforms located within both the paleo and modern central Oregon coastal landscapes. Geoarchaeological investigations conducted as part of this project at the Neptune Site (35LA3) identified mid to late Holocene aged archaeological materials in addition to an erosional contact located between late Pleistocene and Holocene-aged deposits representing the loss of up to 11,400 years of stratigraphic time. To account for this loss of time, a model of landscape change that is occurring at 35LA3 is presented. Depositional sequences such as truncated late Pleistocene aged deposits that underlie mid to late Holocene sediment that are observed at the Neptune Site are similar to, and have been associated with other early sites along the Oregon coast. The identification of these types of deposits and their associated erosional features may serve as key target horizons for future coastal researchers looking for landforms and archaeological deposits and date to the late Pleistocene to mid Holocene.
