Book Archaeological Field Survey of the Neolithic and Chalcolithic Settlement Sites in Kyrenia District North Cyprus

Download or read book Archaeological Field Survey of the Neolithic and Chalcolithic Settlement Sites in Kyrenia District North Cyprus written by Müge Şevketoğlu and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2000 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the division of Cyprus in 1974, fieldwork has carried on unabated in the south although relatively few excavation or survey projects have been undertaken in the north. This is therefore an important publication presenting results from field survey in the area around Kyrenia. Muege Sevketoglu begins with the background to the history of survey in Cyprus before outlining his own research design, survey methodology and aims. This survey project, focusing on the Aceramic Neolithic, Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, aimed to reassess and re-survey known sites, monitor the condition of existing sites and discovered a number of new ones. The resultant data, and the methodology used, are assessed at the end. More than half of the volume is occupied by figures.

Book The Neolithic Revolution in the Near East

Download or read book The Neolithic Revolution in the Near East written by Alan H. Simmons and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of humanity's most important milestones was the transition from hunting and gathering to food production and permanent village life. This Neolithic Revolution first occurred in the Near East, changing the way humans interacted with their environment and each other, setting the stage, ultimately, for the modern world. Based on more than thirty years of fieldwork, this timely volume examines the Neolithic Revolution in the Levantine Near East and the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Alan H. Simmons explores recent research regarding the emergence of Neolithic populations, using both environmental and theoretical contexts, and incorporates specific case studies based on his own excavations. In clear and graceful prose, Simmons traces chronological and regional differences within this land of immense environmental contrasts—woodland, steppe, and desert. He argues that the Neolithic Revolution can be seen in a variety of economic, demographic, and social guises and that it lacked a single common stimulus. Each chapter includes sections on history, terminology, geographic range, specific domesticated species, the composition of early villages and households, and the development of social, symbolic, and religious behavior. Most chapters include at least one case study and conclude with a concise summary. In addition, Simmons presents a unique chapter on the island of Cyprus, where intriguing new research challenges assumptions about the impact and extent of the Neolithic. The Neolithic Revolution in the Near East conveys the diversity of our Neolithic ancestors, providing a better understanding of the period and the new social order that arose because of it. This insightful volume will be especially useful to Near Eastern scholars and to students of archaeology and the origins of agriculture.

Book The Mediterranean Context of Early Greek History

Download or read book The Mediterranean Context of Early Greek History written by Nancy H. Demand and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean Context of Early Greek History p>“Drawing extensively on the latest archaeological data from the entire Mediterranean basin, Nancy Demand offers a compelling argument for situating the origins of the Greek city-state within a pan-Mediterranean network of maritime interactions that stretches back millennia.” Jonathan Hall, University of Chicago “Nancy Demand’s book is a remarkable achievement. Her Heraklian labors have produced stunning documentation of the consequences of the vast spectrum of interaction between the peoples surrounding the Mediterranean Sea from the Mesolithic into the Iron Age.” Carol Thomas, University of Washington Were the origins of the Greek city-state – the polis – a unique creation of Greek genius? Or did their roots extend much deeper? Noted historian Nancy H. Demand joins the growing group of scholars and historians who have abandoned traditional isolationist models of the development of the Greek polis and cast their scholarly gaze seaward, to the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean Context of Early Greek History reveals the role the complex interaction of Mediterranean cultures and maritime connections had in shaping and developing urbanization, including the ancient Greek city-states. Utilizing, and enhancing upon, the model of the “fantastic cauldron” first put forth by Jean-Paul Morel in 1983, Demand reveals how Greek city-states did not simply emerge in isolation in remote country villages, but rather, sprang up along the shores of the Mediterranean in an intricate maritime network of Greeks and non-Greeks alike. We learn how early seafaring trade, such as the development of obsidian trade in the Aegean, stimulated innovations in the provision of food (the Neolithic Revolution), settlement organization (“political form”), materials for tool production, and concepts of divinity. With deep scholarly precision, The Mediterranean Context of Early Greek History offers fascinating insights into the wider context of the Greek city-state in the ancient world.

Book Experiencing Archaeology by Experiment

Download or read book Experiencing Archaeology by Experiment written by Penny Cunningham and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing trend among archaeologists to re-create artefacts and actions at a 1:1 scale in order to answer questions and gain new insights into the past. In November 2007, the University of Exeter hosted a one-day conference on experimental archaeology, and it was soon discovered that experience is a key issue in understanding the use of materials and past processes. Papers presented in this volume consider both theoretical issues and practical case studies. The scope ranges from skinning animals or dyeing wool the Roman way, to producing sound with flint tools, carving stone on Chalcolithic Cyprus, or casting bronze objects both as art and science in Ireland. The eight chapters in this book demonstrate the myriad possibilities of archaeology by experiment. Experimental archaeology is multi-disciplinary by nature, with examples from anthropology, ethnography, taxidermy, finite element analysis and manufacturing systems theory all being present in this volume. Not only does this sub-discipline have a colourful and meaningful past, but it will surely have a significant future.
