Book Archaeological History of Ohio

Download or read book Archaeological History of Ohio written by Gerard Fowke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archaeological History of Ohio: The Mound Builders and Later Indians Many persons interested in archaeology are desirous of extending their knowledge, but have not the time, opportunity, or perhaps courage to wade through the vast amount of literature that has accumulated on this subject in the past fifty years. To lighten this labor, an attempt is made in the following pages to compile so much of it as relates to Ohio antiquities, and present it in convenient form. As certain features of Ohio archaeology can not be understood when considered alone, there must be brought into the work a number of descriptions of remains. Outside her borders. This is the more necessary owing to the general impression that traces of the Mound Builders, wherever found or of whatever nature, belong to one race existing within one definite period of time. To the writer has been assigned the task of preparing the manu script and selecting the illustrations; the reproduction of the latter and the publication of the entire work has been assumed by the Ohio Archae ological and Historical Society. Most of the figures, except those in the chapter on relics, have been borrowed from the sources indicated in the text. The explanation of abbreviated references will be found in the appendix. Book An Archeological History of the Hocking Valley

Download or read book An Archeological History of the Hocking Valley written by James L. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hocking River stretches 95 miles south eastward from Columbus to the Ohio River, draining an area of 1,200 square miles. In this detailed study of the archeological investigations in the Hocking Valley, James L. Murphy summarizes and re-evaluates explorations in the light of current knowledge. He discusses the prehistory of the Hocking Valley for six major time periods: Paleo-Indian, Archaic, Early Woodland, Middle Woodland, Late Woodland, and Late Prehistoric. Never before available in paperback, this new edition also reveals Murphy's original findings during 15 years of archeological surveys and excavations. This book includes detailed reports on the excavation of three Adena mounds, two Fort Ancient village sites, and several multi-component rock shelters. A deliberate effort to present archeological finds of interest to both the professional archeologist and the layman in terms understandable to both has been coupled with an attempt to distinguish clearly between the presentation of facts and the presentation of opinion. The book is enhanced by illustrations of much of the artifact material analyzed in the text, site diagrams, and a map locating all major known archeological sites in the Hocking Valley, and an appendix locating and describing all sites discussed in the text.
