Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arcana of Nature, or the History and Laws of Creation, Vol. 1 Long and patiently have we labored on this volume, which is now consigned to the public, although we are deeply conscious of its many imperfections. Our purpose has been honest. We have endeavored to trace received facts to their legitimate sources, and found by their light as perfect a system as possible. We do not present our work as a finished volume, but one as perfect as the present plane of science will admit; and every new discovery, which bears on any subject it investigates, will find a niche for its reception in future editions. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heavenly Arcana Disclosed, Which Are in the Sacred Scripture or Word of the Lord; Here, First, Those Which Are in Genesis, Vol. 1: Together With Wonderful Things Seen in the World of Spirits and the Heaven of Angels I. The Word of the Old Testament contains arcana of heaven, and each and all things therein regard the Lord, His heaven, the church, faith, and matters of faith. This no mortal gathers from the letter 3 for from the letter or the sense of the letter no one sees anything more than that in general they regard the externals of the Jewish Church. And yet everywhere there are internal things which do not appear at all in the external, save a very few which the Lord revealed and unfolded to the Apostles as that the sacrifices signify the Lord 3 that the land of Canaan and Jerusalem signify heaven, whence they are called heavenly 3 and so also Paradise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Barnwell: A Novel What is religion - but ceremony, or a set of ceremonies: what are ceremonies, but superstition For instance, how absurd, how degrading to a human being, with faculties so comprehensive that all nature bows before him, to which she unfolds her secrets and submits her laws - J say then it must. Be beneath the dignity of such a creature to bend his knees, to how his head, and mumble syllables of absurdities strung together centuries ago, when, by the exercise of his own powers, he might be introduced into the arcana of great Nature herself. George replied The dignity of human nature, sir, is no new subject to me. My father taught it me truly, and exemplified his doctrines by his conduct. He taught me, sir, that the dignity of our nature cannot be degraded by a public acknowledgment of our obligations to the Author of nature, according to the customs and manners of our country; and that it is better to sanction, by ex ample, even prejudices, which cannot be momentarily and safely removed, than by ridiculing those institutions, which the mass of our fellow-citizens hold sacred, to give the reins to uncultivated nature. There is a vein of independence in your reasoning I admire extremely, however much we may deviate in our conclusions, said Mental. This introduction led to a long conversation, in which each seemed to take an interest. Mental appeared less and less disgust ing in the eyes of George, and George delighted old Mental, who expressed a wish that this would not be the last of their conversations. Book The Voice of Nature Or the Soul of Things Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Voice of Nature Or the Soul of Things Classic Reprint written by Charles Wagner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voice of Nature, or the Soul of Things The scenes described and interpreted in this book are but the changeable reflection of life, smiling and wretched by turns, noble and, vile, ideal, or of the earth, earthy, but always interesting. The tiniest crumb of reality, an ant at its labor, a child at play, a leaf falling from the tree, have always strangely captivated me. As cold as the most learned deception leaves me, just so' much the simple and authentic phenomena charm me. One part of the great drama is played there by actors without paint or bombast. The attraction of living things is inexhaustible. Each, by an irresistible movement, becomes a sign, a lesson, a symbol. There is not a slender thread of a. Rivulet hidden in the valley that, step by step, does not guide toward the summit. All creation speaks to him who knows how to lend his ear. Of this voice of things, heard so often in whispers or formidable sounds, I have tried to note a few accents. Not illustrated. 1837 edition. Excerpt: ... While such, however, were the philosophical traditions, the popular tradition appears to have been of a different kind, and as much more ancient as it was more extensive. It taught that the disimbodied spirit becomes a ghost as soon as it is separated from the corporeal frame; a thin, misty, or aerial form, somewhat larger than life, with a feeble voice, shadowy limbs; knowledge superior to what was possessed while in the flesh; capable, under particular circumstances, of rendering itself visible; and retaining so much of its former features as to be recognised upon its apparition; in a few instances wandering about for a certain period of time after death, but for the most part conveyed to a common receptacle situated in the interior of the earth, and denominated scheol ( DEGREESlXi?), hades {aim), hell, or the world of shades. Such was the general belief of the multitude in almost all countries from a very early period of time; with this difference, that the hades of various nations was supposed to exist in some remote situation on the surface of the earth, and that of others in the clouds. The first of these modifications of the general tradition is still to be traced among many of the African tribes, and perhaps all the aboriginal tribes of North America. That most excellent man, William Penn, who appears, with some singularities, to have united in his character as much moral goodness, natural eloquence, and legislative wisdom, as ever fell to the lot of any one, has sufficiently noticed this fact, in regard to the American tribes, in his valuable account of the country, addressed to " The Free Society of Traders of Pennsylvania," drawn up from an extensive and actual survey, and constituting, so far as it goes, one of the most important...

In this presentation I approach the matter altogether from my own point of view, my aim being to show the state of mind to which the student of phenomena is brought by influences which are entirely independent of theological opinions.
